Job Summary

As a Surgical Technologist II at Kaiser Permanente, you will play a vital role in the operating room as a member of the surgical team. Under close supervision, you will assist during surgery by preparing and organizing the operating room, selecting and passing instruments, and maintaining aseptic conditions. You will also assist with patient care during and after surgery, adhering to prescribed policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist physicians during surgery as a member of the surgical team.
  • Pass instruments and supplies as directed, maintaining aseptic technique.
  • Assist in draping the patient, providing proper retraction of tissue, and holding retractors as directed.
  • Control hemostasis by applying a Bovie to a clamp as directed by the surgeon.
  • Assist with sponging, suctioning, and performing sponge, needle/sharp, and instrument counts.
  • Prepare suture for closure of surgical incisions and apply proper surgical dressings as directed.
  • Recognize and respond to acute emergency situations, following established procedures and policies.
  • Hold and position video cameras under the direction of the surgeon.
  • Check surgeons' preference cards and prepare sterile setups.
  • Count with the circulating nurse before prepping the patient.
  • Be accountable for items required for documentation on each procedure.
  • Anticipate the surgeon's needs and keep adequate sutures and supplies ready.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Restock surgical supplies and assist in creating inventory lists.
  • Assist with setting par levels to enable coworkers to restock.
  • Participate in education and in-services when requested by management and coworkers.
  • Work with management to reorganize the work environment and storage spaces.
  • Take call and scrub all cases.
  • Act as a preceptor/trainee for surgical technician students and new surgical technician staff.
Requirements
  • One year of operating room or military equivalent experience in a scrub role within the last two years or recent completion of an operating room training program.
  • Surgical Technologist Certificate within six months of hire from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.
  • Basic Life Support certification.
Additional Information
  • This is a variable position with variable start times.
  • Ten-hour shifts are available.
