Job Overview

This is a part-time role, requiring 20 hours per week. The position reports to the Food Services Supervisor or designated representative and is classified as hourly, non-exempt. The primary responsibility involves preparing meals for the center, developing menus, and assessing food quantity requirements. This role emphasizes a commitment to equipping young individuals for future employment by exemplifying, guiding, and overseeing excellence in the eight Career Success Standards, which include: workplace relations and ethics; information management; communication; multicultural awareness; personal growth and development; career and personal planning; interpersonal skills; and independent living.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Proficiently operate kitchen equipment and safely handle culinary tools.
  • Prepare daily meals in accordance with the established menu, recipes, and timelines.
  • Ensure meals are nutritious, visually appealing, and satisfying.
  • Maintain an inventory of food supplies, request additional items, and suggest replenishment as needed.
  • Assist in compiling weekly and monthly food service reports.
  • Oversee the activities of kitchen assistants during meal preparation, ensuring efficient service and cleanup; assume responsibility for all food service operations during assigned shifts in the absence of the Food Service Manager and Senior Cook.
  • Support the cleaning and upkeep of kitchen and dining areas, ensuring kitchen equipment is maintained in good working order.
  • Keep a daily log of food costs and quantities utilized.
  • Report any unsafe or unsanitary conditions within the kitchen and dining areas.
  • Ensure that leftover food is properly stored and covered.
  • Guide students assigned to the serving line.
  • Participate in mandatory staff training sessions.
  • Foster a respectful and harassment-free environment within the center to ensure a safe working and learning space for both staff and students.
  • Effectively communicate and consistently model appropriate Career Success Standards and employability skills, including personal accountability and computer proficiency.
  • Maintain accountability for staff, students, and resources, adhering to safety protocols in all areas of responsibility.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of two years of training in food preparation and related experience.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a ServSafe food safety certification.
  • Valid driver's license in the state of employment with a satisfactory driving record.

Additional Requirements: Comprehensive knowledge of food preparation, cooking techniques, and nutrition. Availability to work some weekends and flexible hours. Strong personal hygiene and cleanliness practices. Must comply with state or local food handling regulations, whichever are more stringent. CPR/First Aid certification is required. Ability to effectively engage with the trainee population. The position necessitates proficiency in operating office equipment and the ability to collaborate with team members and maintain effective working relationships with all facility staff and departments.

Working Conditions: This role involves frequent standing, walking, bending, squatting, kneeling, and occasional sitting, as well as lifting up to 50 pounds and carrying items. The applicant must possess the ability to see, hear, and speak.

Environmental Demands: The position requires the ability to spend 5% of work time outdoors and 95% indoors; withstand moderate noise levels, including voice levels for 90% of the work time; endure heat up to 93 degrees outdoors during summer months; and work in temperatures as low as 33 degrees during winter months.
