Position Overview
The Lead Financial Strategist will collaborate closely with the Finance Director and engage with both the Commercial and Accounting departments on all elements of trade expenditure, including expense recognition and variance analysis against budget and previous years. This role demands a high level of precision and meticulous attention to detail, along with innovative problem-solving skills. The individual will be instrumental in partnering with the Commercial team to drive the organization's growth initiatives.
This hybrid role is primarily based in our Chicago office, requiring an on-site presence of at least three days per week, with the option to work from our Deerfield office as needed. Attendance at either location may be necessary on specific occasions for significant company events.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the month-end closing process, including the calculation of trade accruals and providing insights on how actual results compare to prior forecasts and the previous year.
- Collaborate with the accounting team to comprehend General Ledger activities, advising on reclassifications and understanding balance sheet movements.
- Work with the accounting team to clarify the process flow of trade accruals, ensuring consistency in trade methodology across clients and that accounting practices are accurately applied during month-end close.
- Facilitate monthly trade meetings with the commercial team, ensuring awareness of all trade activities and discussing any changes in forecasts.
- Verify the functionality of the new trade management tool by running a parallel offline model during the initial months of transition.
- Exhibit a thorough understanding of the business drivers behind Gross and Net Sales, as well as Trade/Sales Promotional expenditures for the Commercial team.
- Collaborate with the Commercial team to optimize trade spending efficiency, overseeing expenditure requests, approvals, and tracking.
- Engage with other departments (Marketing and Supply Chain teams) to gather data for conducting and reviewing financial analyses on promotional activities related to trade and marketing expenditures and their impact on incremental sales.
- Develop Pre-and post-event Sales Return on Investment (ROI) trackers and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
- Monitor, forecast, and report on Gross/Net sales and trade expenditures by lever, customer, product category, month, and year.
- Partner with management to enhance the efficiency of existing processes and improve the quality of insights provided.
A bit about you...
- Bachelor's degree in finance or accounting.
- 2+ years of relevant experience with increasing responsibility, preferably in the Consumer Packaged Goods or Beauty Industries.
- A change agent who will drive development and enhancements in trade fund management and ROI.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel, including complex formulas and pivot tables for handling large datasets.
- Experience with system implementation is a plus.
- Exceptional analytical and financial problem-solving capabilities.
- Solid understanding of finance concepts and accounting principles.
- Outstanding communication skills, organizational techniques, and attention to detail.
