Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY
The Equipment Operator is responsible for various tasks related to the maintenance and construction of roads and bridges, as well as handling construction materials and performing facilities upkeep. This role emphasizes providing efficient and courteous service to the public and local residents.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are representative of the tasks that the Equipment Operator may be required to perform. This description is not exhaustive and may be adjusted as necessary by the County of Geary.

  • Road Maintenance: Operates machinery such as tandem dump trucks, mowers, tractors, and front-end loaders to maintain county roads and bridges. Responsibilities include loading materials, installing drainage systems, building fences, and performing snow removal during winter months.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Conducts minor maintenance on vehicles and performs light mechanical tasks, including welding and cutting.
  • Administrative Duties: Completes necessary paperwork accurately, including tracking hours worked, task details, and materials used.
  • Building and Grounds Maintenance: Engages in general maintenance tasks such as painting, furniture relocation, and grounds cleanup. This includes maintaining lawns, sidewalks, and using power tools for tree and limb removal.

QUALIFICATIONS
To be successful in this role, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in truck driving.
  • Possession of a current Class A Kansas CDL.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Successful candidates will demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance and safety operations.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply relevant policies and procedures.
  • Proficiency in operating various types of equipment, including tandem trucks and front-end loaders.
  • Capability to utilize tools and technology such as two-way radios and GPS systems.

PHYSICAL AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
The role requires physical activities such as lifting, walking, and operating machinery in various weather conditions. Regular attendance is essential due to the nature of public service provided by the County.
