Surgical Services Technician

The Surgical Services Technician plays a crucial role in supporting the surgical team during operations by providing essential assistance to the surgeon. This includes passing instruments, maintaining a sterile environment, and collaborating with nursing staff to prepare the operating room for scheduled procedures.

Job Relationships

Reports to the designated Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and organize the operating room for surgical procedures.
  • Unpack and arrange surgical instruments and sterile supplies while ensuring sterile conditions are upheld.
  • Conduct counts of sponges, needles, and instruments in collaboration with the circulating nurse, adhering to established policies.
  • Disassemble and sanitize operating rooms after each procedure.
  • Verify and replenish supplies at the conclusion of scheduled surgeries.
  • Maintain and update surgeon preference cards.
  • Scrub in and assist the physician during surgical operations.
  • Support nursing staff as required.
  • Assist in the cleaning, packaging, and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Notify the supervisor regarding any equipment repair needs.
  • Complete annual competencies for the specific working area within the designated timeframe.
  • Follow the incident reporting policy and procedures.
  • Comply with all training and requirements as mandated by policy.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service and adhere to the organization's Code of Conduct and Ethics Standards.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Graduation from an accredited OR technician program or equivalent training.
  • Prior experience as an OR technician is preferred, with a minimum of two (2) years.

Licenses and Certifications

  • CST Certification in the State of Illinois.
  • CPR certification in accordance with American Heart Association guidelines is required within 30 days of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to perform occasional heavy lifting.
  • Manual dexterity is essential for handling equipment and instruments.
  • Good physical health is required.
  • Ability to maintain composure and control emotions under stress, exercising tact and sound judgment.
  • Capability to push, pull, stoop, bend, and lift as necessary.
  • Ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods.
  • Adaptability to various personalities and situations.
  • Professional appearance is expected.
  • Maintain a high standard of professional behavior.
  • Work conditions may involve exposure to blood, body fluids, tissues, and potentially hazardous materials.
