SUMMARY
Responsible for delivering proficient resident care while ensuring safety and well-being. Assists in the planning and execution of professional nursing services for residents.

To excel in this role, an individual must be capable of fulfilling each essential duty effectively and must possess a sincere interest in geriatric nursing.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Nursing Responsibilities
Assign tasks and responsibilities to nursing staff in the Terrace, including:
- C.N.A. bathing schedule
- C.N.A. general upkeep with housekeeping (i.e., bed making, trash removal, laundry management)
- Monthly vital signs and weights, as needed.

Ensures a safe resident environment by:

- Removing clutter
- Providing adequate lighting within apartments
- Delivering direct resident care while promoting independence
- Assisting with bathing, dressing, eating, and all nursing activities in the Terrace.


Administers basic nursing treatments to residents as required, including dressing changes, subcutaneous injections, and blood glucose monitoring.
Observes, reports, and documents resident behavior with sensitivity and understanding.

Leads and engages in resident therapeutic activities, upholding and reinforcing residents' rights. Collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to continuously assess residents' conditions. Works alongside physicians and medical staff to evaluate residents' health, develop individualized healthcare plans, and ensure their implementation. Assists in orienting new personnel and provides nursing and emergency support to Hall residents in the absence of a Clinic Nurse. Responsible for remaining on the unit until alternate LPN or RN coverage arrives. Operates specialized equipment as necessary and detects changes in residents' conditions through physical and auditory acuity. Demonstrates tact and understanding when interacting with residents' families and visitors. Maintains discipline in accordance with accepted nursing, medical, and organizational standards. Exhibits the ability to instruct and supervise nursing personnel while receiving doctors' orders and residents' requests.

Medication Administration
- Administers medications to assigned residents
- Maintains medication administration records (MAR)
- Prepares monthly summaries with nursing notes
- Assists in developing individualized service plans for Terrace residents
- Ensures timely and thorough completion of incident reports.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervises 4-7 CNAs and indirectly supervises Private Duty Aides employed by residents.

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints, and resolving issues.


QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Graduate of an accredited practical nursing program and maintains a current license to practice in the District of Columbia. Previous experience in geriatric nursing is preferred but not essential.
Familiarity with written guidelines, federal and district regulations is required.
Strong English communication skills are essential.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
