Department Overview:
The Nuclear Weapons and C2 Systems Department at MITRE is in search of a talented engineer to play a pivotal role in assessing the impacts of natural radiation and nuclear incidents on critical systems. Our department spearheads a dynamic program aimed at enhancing the United States' nuclear deterrent capabilities. We provide data-driven modernization recommendations, prototypes, and analyses that facilitate the effective deployment of warfighter capabilities and enable the cost-efficient modernization of Nuclear Command, Control, and Communications (NC3) and Nuclear Weapon Systems. This role offers a unique chance to support design and mitigation strategies for developing a resilient weapon system that meets operational requirements in various nuclear threat environments, including Electromagnetic Pulse, Ionizing Radiation, Thermal Radiation, Air-Blast, and Radiological exposure.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct analyses of nuclear effects on aircraft, spacecraft, and communication systems to support the development of comprehensive nuclear hardness system-level designs, including analysis and testing.
- Generate design criteria for weapon systems, supported by design analysis, modeling & simulation, equipment and system-level trade studies, and system integration.
- Perform evaluations and validations of components, equipment, subsystems, or weapon system analytical models to ensure compliance with operationally relevant nuclear threat environments.
- Contribute to and review Nuclear Hardness & Survivability Design Analysis Reports (DAR) and nuclear hardness system test plans, documenting equipment compliance and weapon system certification.
- Conduct essential design evaluations and provide technical assessments on system survivability by analyzing system responses to nuclear events using both proprietary and third-party software/physics codes.
Domain-Specific Responsibilities/Technical Skills:
- Possess a working knowledge of nuclear weapon effects and Transient Radiation Effects on Electronics (TREE) for both DoD and commercial systems.
- Engage in technical planning, specification requirements derivation, testing, analysis, design, documentation, and validation to support overall system compliance.
- Demonstrate experience in electrical circuit radiation-hardened design and testing, including piece-part screening and analysis for radiation environment compliance.
- Understand Circumvention & Recovery techniques for compliance assessments and probabilistic performance evaluations during nuclear weapon environment exposure.
- Assess uncertainties and risks associated with radiation-hardened requirements and develop design mitigation strategies.
Basic Qualifications:
- A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related field; or 3 years with a Master's degree; or a PhD with relevant experience.
- Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of particle physics, solar physics, or nuclear physics.
- Solid mathematical and statistical background.
- Proven written and verbal communication skills.
- Willingness to travel up to 20% as needed.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance.
- This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD in Physics, Engineering, or a related field.
- Active DoD Secret or Top Secret Clearance.
- Experience in Nuclear Command, Control & Communication weapon system survivability design.
- Familiarity with radiation environments, including both man-made and natural conditions.
- Experience leading technical projects in nuclear physics.
- Knowledge of transport issues in atmospheric or structural contexts.
- Familiarity with relevant standards and handbooks.
- Experience with engineering software/tools relevant to the field.
