Sacramento, California, United States Department of Fish and Wildlife Full time

Job Overview and Responsibilities

Under the direct oversight of the Fish and Wildlife Interpreter III, the selected candidate will manage the Classroom Aquarium Education Program (CAEP) across the region. This role involves establishing and nurturing collaborations with community partners, creating educational resources, and providing support to educators and students engaged in the CAEP initiative. Additionally, the incumbent will liaise with statewide CAEP personnel, Office of Communications, Education and Outreach teams, other interpretive staff, and fisheries biologists to ensure the responsible and effective execution of the CAEP program.

Join us in delivering experiential learning opportunities to K-12 students through the Classroom Aquarium Education Program. This innovative initiative enables students to incubate salmon and trout eggs in their classrooms, creating a memorable educational experience. The work schedule aligns with the academic year, commencing with program outreach in the early fall and concluding when the last classrooms release their juvenile fish in late spring. The incumbent will collaborate with program partners to design and conduct training sessions for educators new to the program, as well as with fly-fishing organizations that support the classrooms to ensure teachers have the necessary materials for successful program implementation. You will work closely with an assistant to manage teacher applications and maintain an Excel database of all submissions and approvals, ensuring compliance with program guidelines and departmental policies. Furthermore, you will develop and revise a variety of educational materials to enhance student learning regarding aquatic ecosystems, and you will be responsible for drafting an annual grant narrative and report detailing your activities.

Effective communication and collaboration with other CAEP coordinators statewide and with various Department staff members are essential components of this role, promoting quality aquatic education and fostering stewardship behaviors among students.

Working Environment

The position is primarily office-based, with occasional outdoor work on CDFW and partner agency properties in varying weather conditions. Telework options are available, but in-person attendance at certain events and weekly office days will be required. Adherence to the prescribed CDFW uniform is mandatory for public events.

Employee Benefits Overview

As a new State Civil Service employee, you will have access to a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, retirement plans, and various voluntary benefits designed to support your well-being and financial security.
