ESE Supervisor - POHI / SXI / VI Programs

Job Summary

The Detroit Public Schools Community District is seeking a highly qualified and experienced ESE Supervisor to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating the comprehensive continuum of services at all levels for POHI, SXI, and VI programming.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitors and maintains documentation related to overall student progress on IEP goals and objectives.
  • Serves as a resource for District staff, families, and students.
  • Monitors ESE progress on State Performance Plan indicators, including but not limited to Child Find, Timely IEPs, and suspension/expulsion.
  • Identifies trends in school performance for students with exceptionalities based on data gathered and as compared to same age peers without exceptionalities.
  • Interacts with parents of students with exceptionalities for the purpose of defining and implementing services addressing the unique needs of each eligible student.
  • Implements and maintains ESE programs through collaboration with District personnel, colleagues, and community stakeholders.
  • Participates in the design and coordination of professional development activities to inform and equip staff with knowledge and skills needed in special education programs.
  • Leads staff in the development and evaluation of ESE programs and services for continuous improvement, to ensure compliance with state and federal mandates, and the alignment of specialized instruction and assessment with District curriculum standards.
  • Monitors assigned programs and projects to ensure alignment with district and state curriculum and instructional objectives.
  • Assists with recruiting, recommending, and assigning teachers and support aides in compliance with special education rules and regulations.
  • Prepares written documents for the purpose of responding to inquiries and conveying information.
  • Maintains appropriate student and program data to support the development, presentation, and management of program budgets.
  • In collaboration with District personnel, develops and delivers parent and community trainings that promote cooperative and supportive working relationships to improve the outcomes of students with disabilities.
  • Reviews and recommends teaching/learning materials and supplies.
  • Participates in ongoing professional growth and development to remain current on researched-based best practices.
  • Provides assistance with the investigation, resolution, and implementation of corrective actions related to complaints, due process hearings, and compliance monitoring.
  • Provides consultation to ESE Leadership Team, principals, curriculum leaders, and supervisors regarding program operations, compliance, curriculum modifications, accommodations, and purchases of instructional materials and texts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or designee.
Requirements
  • A master's degree or higher in Education or field related to special education.
  • Valid full approval or endorsement in at least one area of special education from the Michigan Department of Education.
  • Approved, or is qualified for approval, under Michigan Department of Education requirements for Supervisor of Special Education (full or temporary approval).
  • A minimum of five (5) years of successful certified teaching experience in special education, three (3) of which must be at the level; or five (5) years successful employment in a related service support position.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education and how it relates to the development, implementation, and monitoring of ESE programs, services, procedures, and processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Proficient with basic computer skills and web-based systems.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability in past assignments.
  • Experience and strong orientation toward urban school systems, preferred.
Security Clearance
