Position Overview
At Houston Methodist, the Culinary Services Associate plays a vital role in the kitchen and dining areas, executing a range of responsibilities that include assisting in meal assembly for patients, basic food preparation, serving customers, and ensuring that service stations are well-stocked.

This role involves the timely transportation of food carts between kitchen areas and patient care units or meeting rooms, as well as performing dishwashing tasks as required.

The Culinary Services Associate is expected to communicate effectively with colleagues and management regarding any identified safety concerns in the workplace, adhering to proper cleaning protocols for equipment and sanitation of workspaces, along with undertaking special cleaning tasks as assigned.

This position requires compliance with all departmental policies and local food safety regulations.


Essential Functions of Interaction

Engages positively and professionally with patients, visitors, and staff. Communicates clearly to enhance teamwork and resolve issues effectively. Collaborates with Patient Services, Catering, Retail Services, and Production teams to ensure accurate and timely meal delivery.

Proactively addresses problems as they arise and provides management with comprehensive reports on any issues encountered.

Conducts oneself in a manner that reflects principles of cultural diversity, equity, and inclusion, contributing to improved employee engagement scores through peer accountability.


Service Responsibilities

Prepares and serves simple food items according to production sheets or menus. Delivers trays accurately and efficiently to designated locations, ensuring adherence to established timeframes for meal service.

Assists in tray assembly on the tray line as needed and works in the dishwashing area as assigned.

Transports pantry supplies, waste, and other materials to designated areas, maintaining clean and organized storage spaces for all food items.

Retrieves soiled trays and returns carts promptly to their appropriate locations.

Ensures that patient tray setups are completed and that all supplies are stocked for each meal period.


Quality and Safety Responsibilities

Adheres to proper procedures for loading and transporting food delivery carts to prevent spills and delays in meal service.

Maintains accurate records of food cart deliveries and ensures that food is presented attractively and kept at the correct temperatures.

Follows all relevant local food safety regulations, including proper labeling and dating of food items to ensure freshness, rotating stock effectively, and discarding expired items.

Ensures that service areas are kept clean and sanitized, paying close attention to menu details and preparing supplies in advance to meet service timelines.


Financial Responsibilities

Minimizes food waste through effective portion control and ensures the proper use and storage of food, supplies, and equipment to manage departmental costs.

Utilizes resources efficiently and seeks to create value while managing time effectively and prioritizing daily tasks, offering assistance to coworkers as needed.


Growth and Innovation Responsibilities

Encourages and shares new ideas and suggestions that can enhance quality or service.

Identifies personal development needs and takes appropriate actions, ensuring regular career discussions with management and maintaining an updated development plan.

Education Requirements

A high school diploma or equivalent education is preferred.
