Position Overview

The Senior Systems Engineer is responsible for conducting comprehensive requirements analysis and management, technical strategy formulation, systems-level design, integration, verification, validation, and thorough cost and risk assessments for innovative development initiatives. This role encompasses all stages of the product lifecycle, including concept development, design, manufacturing, testing, installation, operation, and maintenance. The Senior Systems Engineer will serve as a Lead and Subject Matter Expert, providing essential guidance in the creation of new systems and components.

A successful candidate will possess substantial experience in the deployment, integration, and validation of cutting-edge technologies. Familiarity with passive depth sensing solutions for soldier-mounted systems is a plus. A proven history of collaborating with new vendors or technologies and incorporating them into product designs is essential. Leadership experience in managing a team of systems engineers and establishing best practices in systems engineering is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities
  • Facilitate customer engagement to comprehend and influence the Voice of the Customer and product specifications.
  • Define and implement trade studies to identify the most effective solutions for intricate design and architectural challenges, collaborating with suppliers to assess potential options.
  • Exemplify Sparton's core values while providing mentorship and technical leadership to the engineering team.
  • Offer insights on Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) best practices.
  • Coordinate workforce planning and resource allocation in partnership with Engineering Functional Leadership and Human Resources.
  • Foster collaborative relationships across various Sparton Business Units.
  • Possess a thorough understanding of the systems engineering process.
  • Ensure that lessons learned are documented and integrated into standard procedures.
  • Assist in proposal development activities, including drafting proposal content, estimating costs, and preparing presentations.
  • Review, create, and document system-level requirements, Concepts of Operations (CONOPS), and mission statements.
  • Collaborate with all technical functions to design and document product architectures that align with technical, cost, and scheduling objectives.
  • Conduct requirements management, analysis, and allocation for complex systems designs.
  • Effectively document and communicate designs, results, reports, and presentations.
  • Produce and/or review technical documentation, specifications, and standards.
  • Research, conceptualize, and assess complex system architectures and product designs, recommending modifications to enhance performance, cost-efficiency, reliability, and development timelines.
  • Lead system integration initiatives, including hands-on evaluation of prototypes.
  • Plan and support verification and validation activities for complex system designs to ensure compliance with functional specifications and customer requirements.
  • Prepare and/or deliver technical presentations to customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Maintain clear and regular communication with customers, Sparton affiliates, and other contractors as necessary.
  • Work autonomously and collaboratively with internal and external organizations.
  • Recommend tools to enhance systems engineering design processes and methodologies.
  • Fully understand internal systems engineering protocols and mentor junior engineers.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with Agile product development methodologies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Possess an accredited Bachelor's degree in Aeronautical, Computer Science, Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Electro-optical, Software, Systems Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 15+ years of systems engineering experience with a Bachelor's degree or 12+ years with a Master's degree.
  • Exhibit strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Experience with requirements management tools, such as JAMA, is essential.
  • Familiarity with CMMI, AS 9100, and ISO 9000 process development.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies and tools.
  • Capability to adapt to widely used modeling and requirements management tools as necessary.
  • Ability to integrate into a small, high-performing engineering team.
  • Possess a high level of professional knowledge and skills to address product, process, and system design challenges.
  • Hands-on expertise in product system architecture and requirements management tools.
  • Ability to effectively manage customer expectations and clearly articulate their requirements.
  • Proficiency in preparing successful customer proposals.
