A Nuclear Medicine Technologist (NMT) plays a crucial role in administering radioactive substances to patients for diagnostic imaging purposes. This specialized healthcare professional works closely with nuclear medicine physicians to perform tests that provide detailed images of the body's organs and tissues, aiding in the diagnosis and treatment of various medical conditions.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Radiopharmaceutical Administration:
  • Prepare and administer radioactive substances: Radiopharmaceuticals are used to diagnose and treat various medical conditions. The NMT must ensure correct dosage and safe handling.
  • Monitor patients during administration: Patients may experience adverse reactions or complications. The NMT must be vigilant and take prompt action if necessary.
  • Dispose of radioactive materials: Proper disposal protocols must be followed to minimize risk to patients and staff.
Imaging and Diagnostic Procedures:
  • Operate nuclear medicine imaging equipment: Gamma cameras, PET scanners, and SPECT scanners are used to capture detailed images of organs, tissues, and bones.
