Job Summary

The Pharmacy Technician II will have responsibilities which require some professional judgment and problem-solving skills, as well as more complex day-to-day functions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Staffs Home Infusion Pharmacy.
  • Enters demographics and orders into the computer in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Completes monthly stock inventory; orders needles, syringes, etc. from purchasing and stocks.
  • Answers phone and other duties as directed by the pharmacist on duty.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
  • Compounds IV and piggyback medications, TPNs, and narcotic drips.
  • Completes prior authorization and verification of benefits.
  • Makes all biohazard IVs, including Gammimune, Remicade, etc. using aseptic technique and universal precautions.
  • Follows USP 797 guidelines.
  • Qualified to receive verbal orders by phone directly from physicians or nurses, including NOW and STAT orders.
  • May answer common IV compatibility questions under the direction of the pharmacist on duty.
  • Determines which calls need to be referred to Pharmacist.
  • Special projects as needed.
  • Able to trouble shoot all equipment, e.g., computers, printers, and the TPN compounder.
Certifications and Licensures
  • Drivers License.
  • Vehicle Insurance.
  • OIG (Annually on Hire Date).
  • Fingerprinting.
  • Pharmacy Technician Licensure.
Required Education
  • High school diploma or GED is required.
Experience, Training and Skills
  • One (1) year Hospital Pharmacy experience preferred.
  • Extensive IV compounding experience and precision; work independently and follow through on problems; knowledge of chemo guidelines, maximum dosages and ancillary labels and knowledge of universal precautions for biohazard preparations preferred.
  • Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
Mandatory Requirements
  • Mandatory tuberculosis (TB) testing must be done as required.
  • Mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training must be completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan.
  • Must pass OIG background check annually per Medicare Part D requirements.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions
  • Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
  • Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
  • Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
  • Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time.
  • May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
  • Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material.
  • Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
  • Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling.
  • May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
Physical Demand Level

Light.

Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs.
