Job Overview

The primary role of the Structural Steel Estimator is to deliver precise bid proposals for structural steel projects and conduct thorough scope evaluations for upcoming construction endeavors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accurate material quantity assessments
  • Creation of detailed and comprehensive project proposals
  • Monitoring project budgets with accountability for profit and loss
  • Identifying potential change order opportunities and establishing associated costs
  • Preparation, issuance, and tracking of change order statuses for additional materials beyond the original contract
  • Development of options and recommendations for optimal value solutions based on cost, engineering, quality, or material availability
  • Additional duties include reviewing quotes, managing projects, and overseeing material procurement
  • Leading the department towards achieving its goals through effective management and leadership
  • Functioning as the Lead Estimator

Qualifications:

  • In-depth knowledge of miscellaneous metals
  • Understanding of construction principles alongside steel design concepts as illustrated in architectural and engineering drawings
  • Ability to interpret construction drawings and specifications
  • Capability to prepare proposals with minimal supervision
  • Strong grasp of detailed estimating techniques and cost control measures
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain bid inclusions, exclusions, and proposal clarifications to stakeholders
  • Proficient in multitasking and prioritizing responsibilities
  • Reviewing proposals, specifications, and drawings, attending pre-bid meetings, determining scope of work, and conducting quantity take-offs
  • Building and maintaining relationships with general contractors
  • Overseeing the buyout process in collaboration with the Project Manager

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management or Engineering is preferred
  • Solid understanding of construction principles and practices
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, adaptable and flexible in working with diverse individuals
  • Experience in project setup, budget planning, buyout, and cost reporting is essential
  • Good understanding of critical path scheduling
  • Energetic and highly motivated with a strong sense of urgency
  • Self-motivated and entrepreneurial, capable of working independently as well as collaboratively
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, On-Screen Estimating software, and ACC Build
