Key Responsibilities


The RN in the Operating Room is responsible for coordinating and facilitating the surgical team during all OR activities, ensuring optimal perioperative nursing care for patients. The RN acts as the advocate for the patient.


Our advanced facility includes 34 operating rooms equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including specialized suites for IMRI and endovascular procedures.


If you are interested in pursuing a career as an RN in the Operating Room and lack OR experience, consider our training program designed for new perioperative nurses.

Core Duties

  • Accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, education for patients and families, and transitions of care.
  • Support professional nursing practices across various settings to meet patient and family needs.
  • Function within the Mayo Nursing Care Model, which encompasses planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients.
  • Provide leadership through roles such as preceptor and participation in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Delegate patient care based on skill level, experience, patient acuity, and resource availability.
  • Exhibit excellent communication skills and engage in mentoring and teaching.

Qualifications


All associate degree or diploma registered nurses hired into the Department of Nursing must provide evidence of completing their baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited program within five years of their RN start date.

  • Preferred: Graduate of a baccalaureate nursing program.
  • Preferred: One year of RN experience in a relevant care setting.
  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Experience in a collaborative team environment.
  • Preferred: Experience in General, GYN, and Urology surgery.
  • Computer proficiency required; prior experience with electronic medical records is preferred.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including days, evenings, nights, holidays, weekends, and on-call shifts.
  • Adaptability to unpredictable situations within the work environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership and critical thinking skills.
  • Current RN license in accordance with state regulations.
  • Maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) competency.
  • Additional specialty certification/training as required by the work area.
