FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Job Goal:
  • To assist the special education services teacher in delivering instructional and support services aimed at maximizing student success.
  • To aid the teacher in planning and executing educational experiences for pre-kindergarten students.
  • To support the teacher in fostering a safe and nurturing learning environment.
  • To assist the teacher in providing targeted small group instruction.
  • To help the teacher with the preparation and organization of educational materials.
  • To promote family engagement in the special education program.
Qualifications:
  1. Associate's degree or 48 semester hours from an accredited institution or a passing score on the ACT WorkKeys Assessment.
  2. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under applicable child protection laws.
  3. Demonstrated success in relevant work experience.
  4. Ability and willingness to thrive in a demanding and high-pressure environment.
  5. Proficient in both oral and written communication with students, parents, and others.
  6. Strong interpersonal skills, emphasizing communication and collaboration with diverse individuals and groups.
  7. Ability to identify and resolve issues as a constructive team member.
  8. Capability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
  9. Physical strength, agility, dexterity, acuity, and mobility to fulfill job responsibilities.
  10. Proficient in using technology for communication, data management, and producing/submitting required reports and correspondence.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
  1. Demonstrates support for the educational system and its vision, goals, and priorities.
  2. Delivers lessons or segments of lessons to students, checks the accuracy of work, and assigns additional tasks as directed by the teacher.
  3. Assists students in utilizing books, computers, classroom materials, and other resources.
  4. Helps the teacher maintain routine records related to attendance, grades, test scores, or behavior as assigned.
  5. Facilitates the transfer of students in and out of mobility devices and onto buses.
  6. Assists students with all aspects of personal hygiene, including diapering and lifting as necessary.
  7. Supports the movement of students with special needs as required.
  8. Obtains food from the cafeteria, serves meals, and assists students in feeding themselves.
  9. Helps teachers maintain discipline and encourages positive student behavior.
  10. Manages student behavior, including crisis intervention when necessary, in accordance with established guidelines.
  11. Facilitates the use of mobility equipment for students.
  12. Assists teachers during field trips by supporting students with physical needs and maintaining discipline.
  13. Supports bus drivers in maintaining discipline and addressing the physical needs of students.
  14. Provides adult assistance on special education transportation as assigned.
  15. Assists teachers in directing activities and serves as a play leader for assigned groups.
  16. Performs basic health, first aid, or nursing care for special education students as directed.
  17. Supervises students in the absence of the responsible teacher.
  18. Implements behavior management plans as instructed by the teacher.
  19. Adjusts instructional materials as needed.
  20. Attends IEP meetings when requested.
  21. Transfers with a student to another educational setting as required.
  22. Maintains professionalism and confidentiality regarding school matters.
  23. Identifies potential problems and opportunities for improvement in responsibilities.
  24. Collaborates effectively with supervisors and staff to ensure the implementation of the educational system's vision and goals.
  25. Engages in professional development and demonstrates ethical leadership.
  26. Reports unusual events or work irregularities to appropriate personnel.
  27. Responds to inquiries and feedback in a timely and constructive manner.
  28. Maintains and submits reports and records accurately and on time.
  29. Utilizes and cares for school equipment and resources responsibly.
  30. Employs effective teamwork skills.
  31. Adheres to school policies and regulations.
  32. Reports absences in accordance with established procedures.
  33. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Terms of Employment: Nine-month position according to the Alabama Department of Education's salary schedule.

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the State Department of Education and/or the Alabama Department of Education's policies on the evaluation of classified personnel.
