Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Animal Control Officer to join our team at the County of DuPage, CO. As an Animal Control Officer, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of both humans and animals in our community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Investigate and respond to reports of stray, unwanted, neglected, sick, and injured animals, ensuring humane treatment and rabies control.
  • Respond to complaints from residents and investigate animal law violations, public safety concerns, alleged nuisances, and humane complaints.
  • Investigate and process reports of dangerous/vicious dogs, and record and maintain written logs related to animal bites and other animal control reporting requirements.
  • Perform follow-up work on bite reports, complaints, and ordinance compliance, and contact victims and owners to coordinate rabies observation efforts.
  • Counsel and educate citizens on responsible pet ownership, including dangerous dogs and basic humane care, and serve as a resource for citizens, veterinary professionals, and local authorities on animal-related matters.
  • Issue citations for violations of the Animal Control Act and Humane Care Acts, and County ordinance, and testify in court as needed.
  • Assist the public in surrendering or reclaiming animals, and perform emergency euthanasia for suffering animals, collect, prepare, document, and deliver specimens for rabies testing, and maintain cages and related equipment.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports, and perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent, and one year of animal science or related coursework, and one year of experience working as an officer in an animal control or animal shelter.
  • Valid Illinois Driver's License, and ability to obtain Euthanasia Technician Certificate within one year of hire.
  • Ability to perform heavy work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
