Key Responsibilities- Possess a solid understanding of aseptic techniques to mitigate infection risks.
- Demonstrate knowledge of microbiology principles as they pertain to surgical supply operations and the resistance of microorganisms to sterilization methods.
- Exhibit proficiency in steam autoclaving procedures.
- Utilize chemical sterilization methods effectively, including systems like Sterrad.
- Accurately interpret and document results from sterilization tests.
- Operate High Level Disinfection (HLD) systems, such as Medivator Advantage and Trophon, and perform manual HLD using Cidex OPA.
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of surgical instruments, including their cleaning, sterilization, and storage requirements.
- Identify and replace damaged or broken instruments as necessary.
- Understand surgical procedures conducted in a hospital operating room setting.
- Familiarity with medical and surgical terminology, human anatomy, and physiology is essential.
- Implement proper handling and reprocessing techniques for flexible endoscopes.
- Follow detailed manufacturer instructions for cleaning and sterilization of various Reusable Medical Equipment (RME).
- Meet all physical demands of the Sterile Processing Services department.
- Communicate effectively in English, both written and verbal.
- Work in a dynamic environment with varying noise levels and temperatures.
- Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) throughout the workday.
- Adapt to changing tasks as needed.
Applicants must meet one or more of the following criteria:
- Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or higher from the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM/HSPA).
- Completion of a nationally recognized CRCST training program with at least 2 years of documented experience in the field.
- Graduation from a nationally recognized Operating Room Technician training program with a minimum of 2 years of experience in a Sterile Processing Service environment.
- Completion of a U.S. military training program for Surgical Technicians with at least 2 years of experience in a Sterile Processing Service environment.
- VA Level 2 certification with a minimum of 2 years of current experience in the SPS environment.
- Non-Certified technicians with a minimum of 5 years of documented and verifiable SPS hands-on experience.
Additionally, candidates must possess a current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Physical RequirementsAll candidates must be capable of:
- Sitting, standing, walking, lifting, squatting, bending, twisting, and reaching above shoulder height during the work shift.
- Lifting up to 50 lbs from floor to waist and up to 20 lbs regularly.
- Carring up to 40 lbs a reasonable distance.
- Applying push/pull force of 30 lbs.
