Job Summary

The Pathology Grossing Technician is responsible for the preparation, gross inspection, documentation, and histologic processing of laboratory specimens. This role requires attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work independently in a high-production environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and grossly inspect specimens submitted for histopathology, ensuring accurate documentation and recording of findings.
  • Examine and document receipt of cytology specimens, maintaining diagnostic viability and correct labeling of materials.
  • Prepare small biopsy specimens for histologic processing, exercising good judgment and scientific protocols when handling tissue samples.
  • Maintain an organized and safe work environment, adhering to established tissue processing protocols and quality control checks.
  • Navigate laboratory information systems successfully, applying appropriate case documentation and ensuring specimen integrity and diagnostic viability.
  • Provide safe disposal of biological and hazardous waste, identifying problems and bringing them to the attention of management.
  • Support inventory management and tracking needs for processing supplies and reagents, maintaining lab equipment through upkeep and quality control checks.
  • Participate in continuing education and in-service training sessions, maintaining established department policies, procedures, and objectives.

Requirements
  • Associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology required; Bachelor's degree desired.
  • Knowledge of biology, chemistry, histology, immunology, and mathematics required; 1 year of clinical experience in the pathology setting preferred.
  • Computer literacy and ability to operate multiple Microsoft Office applications and laboratory information systems (LIS) required.

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to execute a wide variety of lab techniques accurately.
  • Ability to work independently, making decisions based on organization guidelines/policies, laws, and regulations.

  • Requires sitting and standing associated with a laboratory environment; ability to work 2nd and 3rd shift hours required.
  • Handles biological and hazardous waste and reagent-grade chemicals.
