About the Role:
The Peer Support Program is a unique initiative that is peer-led and recovery-focused, aimed at helping individuals with mental health conditions navigate their recovery journey. As a Peer Support Specialist, you will collaborate with clients to amplify their recovery by emphasizing their strengths, modeling effective recovery strategies, and empowering them to challenge the stigma surrounding mental health.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engage actively as a team member under the guidance of the team leader, with specific duties tailored to your education and experience.
- Provide essential supportive services, including transportation, utilizing your personal vehicle.
- Facilitate mentoring and problem-solving sessions, offering encouragement in various settings.
- Maintain timely communication with clients to address their inquiries and enhance their overall well-being.
- Deliver practical assistance and advocacy, coordinating individualized support to help clients secure daily living necessities.
- Organize social activities and facilitate group sessions as directed by senior staff.
- Establish productive relationships with community organizations to advocate for client and family empowerment.
- Document all interactions and activities as required, ensuring compliance with HIPAA and ethical standards.
Qualifications:
To thrive in this role, candidates should possess:
- A high school diploma or GED; a bachelor’s degree is preferred but not mandatory.
- Experience as a consumer of mental health services or lived experience supporting someone with mental health challenges.
- Previous experience in behavioral health is advantageous.
- A valid California driver’s license and auto insurance, along with proof of education.
- Preferred: Medi-Cal Peer Certification from the California Mental Health Services Authority.
Skills and Experience:
The ideal candidate will have:
- A minimum of two years of experience as a Peer Support Specialist.
- Insight into the challenges faced by individuals with mental health conditions and their families.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to convey the consumer perspective effectively.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, with proficiency in computer usage.
- The ability to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently.
Physical Requirements:
This role is based in an office environment, requiring:
- Prolonged periods of sitting, with occasional standing and walking.
- The ability to lift and move items up to 20 pounds.
- Frequent use of computers and office equipment.
- Off-site travel for community meetings and client needs.
