Job Overview

Position Summary

The .NET Software Engineer plays a pivotal role in developing and sustaining high-quality custom software solutions, ensuring timely delivery within budget constraints. Collaborating closely with the Information Technology department, the Engineer will design comprehensive, data-driven applications and web solutions, managing all facets of a project from requirements gathering to design, development, quality assurance, and deployment. With a commitment to excellence and adaptability, the Engineer will provide optimal support to the Institute of Food Technologists' internal and external stakeholders, including customers, members, and vendors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participates in project planning sessions to grasp business requirements.
  • Evaluates business needs through user discussions and assesses the technical feasibility of projects.
  • Prepares time estimates for requested modifications and collaborates with IT colleagues to schedule these changes.
  • Presents design alternatives, recommending the most effective approach, and develops, implements, and establishes key performance metrics.
  • Creates software architecture diagrams as necessary to illustrate project functionality.
  • Designs database modifications and user interfaces that fulfill the required functionality and meet the functional specifications.
  • Utilizes established development tools and conventions, including Visual Studio, ASP.NET, SQL Server, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, C#/VB.NET.
  • Identifies, corrects, and eliminates errors and bugs in production software.
  • Responsible for modifying software based on approved requirements from customers and staff.
  • Leads small to medium-scale projects based on internal and external customer needs.
  • Develops components and systems to meet specifications and design requirements.
  • Adheres to established development tools, guidelines, standards, and conventions.
  • Creates and executes unit tests for new and modified components and systems.
  • Deploys new and updated components into the testing environment.
  • Assists staff in developing and conducting user acceptance tests.
  • Releases approved projects into the production environment.
  • Maintains clear technical documentation for custom software.
  • Documents software for use by customer service and other staff members.
  • Implements changes to production software using standard tools and procedures.
  • Secures prior approval for production software deployments following change control protocols.
  • Stays informed about developing trends and technologies in the industry.
  • Ensures compliance with industry regulations and best practices, adhering to company processes and procedures.
  • Fosters brand loyalty by building and maintaining relationships with vendors through guidance and participation in vendor selection and ongoing interactions.

Travel Requirements

Occasional domestic travel may be necessary, including the ability to attend evening, weekend, and overnight meetings.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of software development experience, with at least 2 years on the .NET platform.
  • Experience throughout the full project lifecycle.
  • 2+ years managing small to medium-scale software projects.
  • 2+ years performing business requirements analysis and system design.
  • Proficient in C#, ASP.NET, MVC, and SQL Server.
  • Skilled in IIS and Visual Studio.
  • Experienced in the software deployment process.
  • Expertise in Web Services (SOAP, REST, OData) or WebAPI, XML, or JSON.
  • Proficient in JavaScript, jQuery, Ajax, CSS, Bootstrap, HTML5.
  • Expert in SQL queries, stored procedures, and data import/export.

Preferred Qualifications

Working knowledge or experience in Data Warehousing (e.g., Snowflake), ETL tools, and BI report generation is advantageous.
