Job Overview

The City of Aurora is seeking a dedicated Animal Shelter Assistant to provide compassionate care and support for sheltered animals. This role involves cleaning and maintaining kennel facilities, assisting patrons, and ensuring the well-being of animals in our care.


Responsibilities

  • Provides humane care, treatment, and safe handling of animals in the shelter, including feeding, cleaning, grooming, and enrichment.
  • Assists with the intake of animals and kenneling of all incoming shelter animals.
  • Performs initial physical exams of animals upon intake and administers vaccinations, while performing data entry to update animal records.
  • Handles and moves animals, facilitating interactions between animals and patrons during the intake, release, or adoption process.
  • Monitors and maintains animal food and shelter supplies, fostering teamwork and providing assistance to division staff and volunteers.
  • Directs and provides guidance for community services workers and volunteers.
  • Assists with front office duties, greeting, interacting with, and providing information to citizens on the Aurora Animal Services Division's policies.
  • Meets with potential adopters to gather and provide information to assist in the adoption process.
  • Educates prospective adopters on the adoption of suitable pets, reviews and completes adoption paperwork.
  • Observes animals for signs of disease or injury and assists in re-checking animals.
  • Performs euthanasia and related tasks.
  • Take regular inventory of animals and reports discrepancies.
  • Maintains proper functioning and safety of kennel equipment, transports animals, drives, cleans, and maintains vehicles assigned to the shelter.
  • Assists in janitorial and light maintenance duties.
  • Maintains grounds, including pulling weeds and picking up trash.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.



  • Education: High School Diploma or GED.
  • Experience: One year of animal-related experience or customer service experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications:

    • One year of experience working in an animal shelter.
    • Euthanasia Certification within one year.

  • Knowledge:

    • General knowledge of companion animal welfare, breeds, and species.

  • Skills:

    • Animal handling skills.
    • Providing friendly customer service.
    • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
    • Strong attention to detail.

  • Abilities:

    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens.
    • Handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy.
    • Ability to complete work without close supervision.
    • Provide humane care and treatment for a variety of animals.
    • Perform euthanasia.
    • Creatively solve problems, negotiate, and handle stressful situations in a positive manner.
    • Operate a city vehicle.

  • Licenses and Certifications Required:

    • Valid Colorado Driver's License.
