Position Title: Visual Arts Educator - Photography and Narrative Techniques

Reports to: Program Supervisor

Department: Exceptional Children's Foundation Art Center

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Compensation: $18 - $20 /hr

Program Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-3:30pm; Some evening and weekend work may be required

Supervisory Responsibility: None

Position Overview

Under the guidance of the Program Supervisor, the Visual Arts Educator will facilitate and support studio art practices for individuals (adults with diverse learning, behavioral, emotional, and intellectual challenges) to foster professional growth and integration into the local art community as active artists. Instruction may encompass various artistic mediums including but not limited to film and digital photography, mixed media techniques, drawing, painting, bookmaking, and creative writing. Darkroom expertise is not a prerequisite for this role. Art instruction will align with each artist's individual artistic objectives (ISP).

Key Responsibilities
  • Implement personalized artistic objectives as outlined in the artist's ISP. Ensure the safety of artists during operational hours and while participating in community activities. Maintain monthly progress and attendance documentation and engage in meetings and studio services as assigned.
  • Provide guidance on the appropriate use of materials, artwork preservation, and the creation of marketable art, while assisting artists in developing their unique artistic voice and style. Ensure safe equipment usage and establish necessary safety protocols.
  • Prepare and maintain equipment for daily use. Organize and label artists' portfolios, ensuring proper storage of artwork.
  • Engage in staff meetings to establish and implement artistic, educational, psychological, and social goals for each artist, considering the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse individuals. Deliver services in accordance with relevant legislation and person-centered practices.
  • Adhere to established protocols during incidents or emergencies. Utilize appropriate procedures to assist individuals exhibiting challenging behaviors. Report medical emergencies and unusual incidents to supervisory staff.
  • Promote the Art Center during operational hours to visitors and guests, including informing the public about the Art Center's mission and services. Support events and programs through material distribution and information sharing.
  • Assist in organizing special exhibits showcasing the work of ECF artists at various venues. Help with the setup and breakdown of art shows, and engage with the public to facilitate discussions about the artists' work.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Comply with the organization's Injury and Illness Prevention Program and Safety Procedures.
  • Adhere to organizational policies and procedures, including mandated reporting requirements.
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education/Certifications: Bachelor’s degree with demonstrable skills in Photography and Mixed Media techniques.

Experience: Minimum of six months in relevant fields such as studio work, teaching, public and private art projects, or art installations.

Knowledge/Skills:
  • Expertise in a specific art discipline and photo/narrative arts.
  • Skills in teaching, facilitating, and supporting artists in achieving their artistic goals.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills suitable for instructing adult artists.
  • Availability to instruct all artists within the Art Center.
Requirements
  • Portfolio showcasing completed work.
  • Pass a background investigation.
  • Provide evidence of a negative TB test initially and every three years thereafter.
  • Obtain and maintain relevant certifications.
  • Ability to use public transportation or personal vehicle for community outings.
  • Proof of auto insurance and a safe driving record if using personal vehicle for work purposes.
Work Environment

This role involves working with adults who have diverse learning, behavioral, emotional, and developmental challenges. Employees may encounter individuals in crisis or exhibiting distress. The work environment may include exposure to various artistic materials and tools, as well as frequent interruptions and varying noise levels.

  • Ability to move among artists for a significant portion of the work shift.
  • Teach visual art and demonstrate techniques effectively.

  • Regularly lift and move up to 60 lbs. with assistance.
  • Occasionally travel to various locations within the region.
Pay Range

$18.00 Hourly to $20.00 Hourly
