About the Opportunity

The University of South Carolina Joseph F. Rice School of Law is seeking a highly qualified individual to serve as the Associate Dean and Director of the Law Library. This is a 12-month tenured/tenure-track law faculty appointment that requires a Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school and an M.L.I.S. or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited school.

The successful candidate will have substantial academic law library experience, including management of staff and budgets, and experience in collection development. They will also have a commitment to teaching and a demonstrated record of scholarship and teaching.

The Law Library is a vibrant and diverse patron base, serving the law school and university communities, the practicing bench and bar, and the citizens of South Carolina. The Director will foster an environment of innovation and continuous improvement, encourage collaboration internally and externally to meet constituent needs, and develop new services for a diverse community of patrons.

Responsibilities

The Associate Dean and Director will direct the Law Library, including management of its budget, personnel, and policies. They will also be responsible for the professional development of the law library faculty and staff, and representation of the Law Library in the School of Law, the University, and other venues.

The Director will teach introductory legal research in a required first-year integrated research and writing course, and may be expected to teach upper-level courses in legal research and fulfill other teaching responsibilities in the School of Law.

Requirements

A Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school and an M.L.I.S. or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited school are required. Substantial academic law library experience, experience in management of staff and budgets, and experience in collection development are also required.

Successful use of technology to enhance library services, a commitment to teaching, and an established record of scholarship and teaching are preferred qualifications.
