Position Summary

The Electrical Design Engineer plays a crucial role in the development of design documentation necessary for the procurement, construction, and installation of our products. This position involves interpreting customer requirements and industry standards to create detailed drawings, bills of materials, and work instructions that facilitate the manufacturing process. The Electrical Design Engineer also provides essential documentation to assist field technicians and contractors in the successful installation and commissioning of equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Conduct programming, testing, and troubleshooting of traffic signal control systems both in the workshop and on-site.
  2. Interpret and apply various codes, including MUTCD, NEMA, and UL, to ensure compliance in product design and processes.
  3. Create electrical wiring diagrams based on project specifications, templates, or previous designs for traffic and lighting control systems.
  4. Develop mechanical drawings for panels, cables, and cabinet layouts, collaborating with mechanical designers as needed.
  5. Ensure all design documentation adheres to industry standards and MoboTrex practices.
  6. Compile and verify bills of materials (BoM) for assemblies and components.
  7. Prepare cost estimates based on customer specifications or sales requests.
  8. Draft assembly and installation instructions for various projects.
  9. Establish test procedures to validate the functionality of new or untested designs.
  10. Provide technical support via telephone as required.
  11. Utilize CAD software for all design work and manage the documentation archiving process.
  12. Analyze emerging technology trends and recommend enhancements to our product offerings.
  13. Monitor design system technologies and suggest improvements when necessary.
  14. Benchmark against other industries to implement best practices.
  15. Document the design process from initial customer specifications to final design release.
  16. Record customer-specific preferences in an accessible format for team collaboration.
  17. Track key performance metrics, including lead time, on-time delivery, and quality reporting.
  18. Develop action plans to address challenges and promote continuous improvement initiatives.
  19. Participate in user group events to present solutions and clarify proposals for customers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Proficient in translating traffic system requirements into standardized electrical designs.
  • Familiarity with traffic products, controllers, software, and design principles is preferred.
  • Experience with MUTCD specifications is essential.
  • Knowledge of NEMA Traffic standards, particularly ATC and Caltrans, is advantageous.
  • Field service experience in traffic systems is a plus.
  • Experience in system integration, particularly with multiple suppliers, is beneficial.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and other design software.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and work under tight deadlines.
  • Skilled in using electrical and electronic testing equipment, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Local candidates are preferred; relocation and visa sponsorship are not available.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

This position primarily involves office work, with occasional visits to the production floor. The employee must be able to sit, talk, hear, and use hands to manipulate objects or controls. Regular standing and walking are required, along with occasional bending or reaching. The role may involve lifting up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
