Position Overview:

The Surgical Nurse First Assistant operates under the direct guidance of the Director of Nursing. This role involves performing surgical tasks under the supervision of a surgeon, while also evaluating, planning, implementing, and documenting nursing care for patients in the perioperative phase.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Function as the primary assistant during surgical procedures, collaborating closely with the attending physician.
  • Review and analyze patient medical records, including history and physical exams, lab results, and consent documentation.
  • Communicate essential information and contraindications to the surgical team.
  • Assist in positioning patients and preparing the surgical environment.
  • Conduct surgical skin preparations using established aseptic techniques.
  • Provide support to the operating team by stepping in as needed during surgeries.
  • Deliver nursing care in various settings, including perioperative and post-anesthesia care units.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of operating room advancements and surgical technologies.
  • Participate in ongoing education and training to uphold competency and certifications.
  • Mentor and train fellow surgical team members on best practices.
Qualifications:

Education: Associate's degree required; BSN preferred.

Certifications: Must be a licensed registered nurse in the State of Ohio and hold certification as a registered first assistant (CRNFA). Current CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications are also required.

Experience:

A minimum of five years of experience in an operating room setting is essential, along with a solid understanding of the physiological and anatomical aspects of surgical procedures.

Physical Requirements:

This role demands full mobility, manual dexterity, and the ability to stand for extended periods. Candidates should be prepared for potential exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
