Summer Camp Counselor

The YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Summer Camp Counselor to join our team. As a Summer Camp Counselor, you will be responsible for the supervision, health, and safety of an assigned group of children aged 5-12 years old.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the mission, vision, and goals of the YMCA.
- Promote a professional work environment through character development by modeling the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
- Lead in a manner that advances our cause to strengthen the foundations of community through programs that focus on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
- Be responsible for the supervision, behavior management, and safety of an assigned group of campers.
Requirements:
- Minimum of 18 years of age.
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- One year of experience working with children in a supervised setting preferred.
- Proof of a negative TB test within the last two years.
- Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED/O2 prior to first day of working at camp.
- Complete and maintain required trainings to include but not limited to: New Employee Orientation (NEO), Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), and Sexual Harassment upon hire and annually thereafter.
- Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check, sex offender registry check, and Child Protective Services check.
Working Conditions:
- Maintain sight and sound supervision.
- Maintain accurate attendance records and other records as assigned.
- Assist in implementation of the camp program under the direction of the Camp Director or designated supervisor.
- Maintain discipline and safety within group.
- Prepare and clean up needed supplies and materials for daily activities.
- Actively participate in organized games and activities, including but not limited to, swimming, teambuilding activities, and arts and crafts.
- With the assistance of the Camp Director or designated supervisor, communicate with parents regarding camper's needs and report daily activities.
- Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
- Follow Virginia Standards for Licensed Child Day Centers and department Association Standards.
- Wear staff uniform and name tag, or professional attire when appropriate.
- Act as a leader in emergency situations. Report any accidents or incidents according to Emergency Communication Action Plan.
- Ensure all members, guests, and program participants are in a safe environment and actively follow center Emergency Operations Plan (EOP).

Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to communicate and work with assigned ages and skill levels and provide necessary instruction to campers.
- Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to assigned activities.
- Physical ability to respond appropriately to emergencies and those situations requiring first aid.
- Physical strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
- Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.

- Superior quality standards are met as evidenced by department's Association Standards Audit Score.
