Position Overview
We are in search of a Senior Applied Scientist to become a vital member of our AI Security division. This team is dedicated to developing security tools and streamlined solutions that guarantee the Generative AI (GenAI) experiences crafted by Amazon meet our rigorous security standards. Furthermore, we leverage AI to create foundational services that enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of security mechanisms.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research and devise scalable methodologies to tackle our most challenging AI security issues.
- Collaborate with applied scientists, software development engineers, and security engineers to lead the modeling and technical design of a foundational GenAI-based security service.
Team Mission
The AI Security organization is committed to ensuring that the Generative AI experiences provided by Amazon maintain our high security standards while utilizing AI to bolster Amazon's security posture in a more efficient and effective manner.
A Day in the Role
Your daily activities will include engaging with Vulnerability Management and Incident Response teams to analyze data flows, prediction use cases, and identify automation gaps. You will research data sets and collaborate with security and software engineers to gather necessary data for your analyses. After defining the problems, you will perform experiments, regressions, and various analytical tasks to derive insights. You will also develop and train models that will be deployed in a production environment with the assistance of software engineers, and work closely with your security team partners to evaluate the effectiveness of the models created.
About the Team
The Defensive Security team is a close-knit group located in Austin, Texas, primarily composed of software engineers, with plans to evolve into a hybrid team of software and security engineers. This team benefits from experienced Amazonian leadership, known for mentoring, coaching, and supporting career advancement.

Basic Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in building machine learning models for business applications.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Java, C++, Python, or similar.
- PhD or Master's degree with 6+ years of applied research experience.
- Experience in enhancing the effectiveness of Large Language Models (LLMs).
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with modeling tools such as R, scikit-learn, Spark MLLib, MxNet, Tensorflow, numpy, scipy, etc.
- Experience in prompt engineering and designing retrieval-augmented generation frameworks to enhance LLM effectiveness.
- Ability to translate business requirements into technical specifications.
- Excellent communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability in a dynamic environment.
