We are seeking an experienced Education Reporter to join our team at Community Impact Newspaper. As an Education Reporter, you will play a crucial role in informing students and parents in their communities by providing important updates on tax rates, expansions, and ballot measures in their local school board and community college districts.
Key Responsibilities- Attend school board meetings and connect with district officials to gather information and insights.
- Network with other community leaders to stay up-to-date on local education news and trends.
- Research and analyze data to provide in-depth coverage of education-related issues.
- Write engaging and informative articles for our newspaper, focusing on the impact of education on local communities.
- Develop relationships with sources across beats to gather information and insights.
- Take photos to complement written work and enhance the overall reader experience.
- Meet deadlines and manage your own time efficiently to ensure timely publication of articles.
- Pitch and develop your own story ideas with minimal supervision.
- Experience covering city council meetings and school board meetings.
- Confidence in researching data and experience with data visualization.
- Previous experience writing for a professional publication or school newspaper.
- Ability to produce 10 stories per week.
- Availability on weekdays from 8:30 AM to 5 PM, plus evenings/weekends as needed to cover meetings and breaking news.
- Eagerness to interview sources in-person throughout the greater metro area.
- Proven ability to develop relationships with sources across beats.
- Comfortable with taking photos to complement written work.
- Proficient in AP Style and familiar with content management systems.
- Understanding of the importance of meeting deadlines and managing your own time efficiently.
- Confidence in finding and pitching your own story ideas with minimal supervision.
- Starting hourly rate of $21.64 ($45,000 annually) or more with experience.
- $135 monthly stipend for gas, mileage, and tolls.
- Up to 80 hours of vacation and 80 hours of personal/sick time (prorated) in your first year.
- 10 paid holidays per year, plus a paid day off for your birthday.
- Medical, dental, vision, and employer-paid life insurance.
- Supplemental insurance options including accident and critical illness insurance.
