Position Overview:
The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)-II is a highly skilled practitioner who delivers comprehensive midwifery services. The CNM offers care throughout the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum phases, as well as gynecological care in clinical settings. High-risk patients are managed in collaboration with the medical team. The CNM-II will operate in various environments including outpatient clinics, obstetrician offices, and birthing centers, focusing on improving clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and safety. Responsibilities may include assisting in obstetric surgical procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
1. **Clinical Services:** The CNM is responsible for delivering clinical care and managing mothers and infants according to established protocols. This includes conducting physical assessments, gathering and documenting health data, managing labor and delivery, performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ordering lab tests, and prescribing necessary treatments and medications. The CNM formulates and executes care plans for prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn, and interconceptional care within the midwifery scope of practice.
2. **Communication and Consultation:** Exemplifies advanced nursing practice through professional conduct, effective communication, and mutual respect. Engages with patients, families, and the healthcare team to promote patient-centered care, ensuring continuity and culturally sensitive support.
3. **Ultrasound Services:** Conducts limited obstetrical ultrasound as needed, including assessments of fetal well-being, placental location, cardiac activity, fetal presentation, and weight estimation.
4. **Leadership and Quality Improvement:** Participates in unit and hospital committees focused on women's and infant services. Applies current research and evidence-based practices in clinical settings, contributing to the development of care standards and supporting clinical research initiatives.
5. **Education and Professional Development:** Identifies educational needs and provides training for nursing staff and the healthcare team. Mentors nurse midwifery students and offers educational resources to residents and medical students. Engages in ongoing professional development and contributes to community education regarding maternal and newborn care.
Qualifications:
A. **Education:**
- Master's Degree in Nurse Midwifery from an accredited program.
- Prior obstetric nursing experience is essential.
- A minimum of one year of advanced practice CNM experience is required.
- Registered Nurse licensure in the state of Michigan.
- Certification as a Nurse Midwife from the American Midwifery Certification Board.
- Basic Life Support certification is mandatory.
- Neonatal Resuscitation certification within six months of hire.
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring certification within six months of hire.
- Certification in Obstetrical Ultrasound is preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills along with proficiency in computer applications.
