As a Medical Assistant III at Kaiser Permanente, you will play a vital role in supporting our healthcare team in providing high-quality patient care. You will work under the supervision of a clinic nursing supervisor and with direction from charge nurses, staff nurses, and practitioners to accomplish proactive patient management.
You will perform a variety of technical, clerical, receptionist, and patient care duties to assist practitioners and other members of the healthcare team in providing exceptional patient care through our healthcare system.
Essential Responsibilities:- Interact with patients, families, customers, and other members of the healthcare team in a courteous and professional manner.
- Recognize needs and concerns of members and employees while maintaining a positive working relationship.
- Identify and record vital signs, prevention data, medications, chief complaints, and other pertinent information.
- Demonstrate and apply critical thinking, observing, recording, and reporting pertinent patient symptoms, reactions, condition changes, and information.
- Immediately identify and report to RN or practitioner all adverse observations, reactions, conditions, or emergency situations.
- Use data systems to identify and pend orders for prevention and screening services.
- Provide for physical and emotional comfort and safety of patients.
- Accept orders from practitioners for treatments and procedures conducted in the unit within the scope of work and competencies.
- Transcribe patient-specific data into electronic systems using the most current practitioner-generated ICD and CPT codes for purposes of billing, coding, and clinical data reporting and analysis.
- Anticipate provider needs during patient procedures.
- Adjust to changes in procedures, assignments, or workload as directed by providers.
- Serve as a member of the healthcare team.
- Perform efficiently and remain calm in emergency patient care/clinic situations.
- Follow established procedures and inform appropriate persons.
- Prioritize care based on acuity of patients.
- Assist practitioners or RNs with a wide variety of patient care procedures and tests.
- Collect, label, and process specimens as required by practitioners and in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Perform point-of-care laboratory tests as authorized by policy and delegated by nursing supervisors.
- Review written instructions/educational materials with patients and families regarding preparation and/or follow-up for diagnostic tests, medical procedures, surgeries, and treatments as ordered by practitioners, nurses, or nursing supervisors.
- Coordinate efforts with nursing supervisors, staff, and other departments to maintain standards of patient care.
- Apply and remove dressings and pads as ordered by practitioners.
- Apply and remove Unna boots as ordered by practitioners and under direct supervision of nurses or practitioners, and after completion of training and competency requirements.
- Apply and instruct patients in the use of pre-manufactured splints, braces, and other orthotic devices using pre-printed instructions.
- Assist practitioners by setting up sterile and unsterile fields and assisting with routine, minor surgical procedures as delegated by nursing supervisors, nurses, and/or practitioners, in accordance with established guidelines, policies, and procedures, and upon completion of clinical competency requirements.
- Respect patients' rights to privacy, dignity, and safety.
- Provide emotional support to patients as needed.
- Ensure equipment is available and in clean, safe, and operable condition.
- Follow appropriate procedures for reporting malfunctions, repairs, or replacements within limits of authority.
- Identify and report equipment needing required maintenance or inspection.
- Maintain and promote a clean, safe, and well-equipped environment for patients, family members, and staff.
- Follow departmental and organizational directives to isolate and process contaminated instruments and supplies.
- Clean rooms, furniture, instruments, and equipment according to established policies and procedures.
- Review, compile, document, and prepare paper or online clinical records for clinical encounters.
- Retrieve other clinical documentation and records as requested.
- Retrieve and/or deliver mail for practitioners and healthcare team members.
- Inform practitioners of diagnostic results to assure expeditious follow-up.
- Notify practitioners of patient cancellations, postponements, and failures to show.
- Encourage open communication with coworkers and supervisors.
- Relay pertinent information to staff members in own department or other departments.
- Assure information is accurate and complete.
- Assist patients and/or family members with non-clinical complaints or inquiries, such as customer service, appointment scheduling, etc.
- Refer clinical-related problems or issues requiring higher-level intervention to clinic nursing supervisors or designated patient concerns resource personnel.
- Receive telephone calls.
- Transfer calls from patients for clinical concerns or questions to registered nurses (RNs) or practitioners.
- Provide information to callers on service-related questions.
- Arrange patient appointments based on guidelines specific to severity level and type of procedure.
- Answer and make telephone calls regarding prescription refills.
- Relay normal diagnostic results according to patient-specific instructions as ordered by practitioners.
- Relay messages between callers and practitioners or other members of the healthcare team.
- Process referrals as directed.
- Assist and support receptionists with daily and procedure/operating room schedules.
- Prepare and administer monthly calendars and practitioners' schedules as they intersect with other departments and services.
- Identify and report problems with accuracy and completeness of appointment data, monthly practitioner, and nursing schedules.
- Review, coordinate, and document scheduling corrections and changes.
- Adjust practitioner schedules to accommodate same-day appointments, patient surgeries/procedures, and/or patients' schedules.
- Maintain familiarity with various schedules, clinic procedures, surgeries, coding techniques, and preferences unique to individual practitioners and nursing staff.
- Assist in meeting organizational standards by gathering documents for practitioner notes and orders, and alerting about problems.
- Transcribe patient-specific data into electronic systems using the most current practitioner-generated ICD and CPT codes for purposes of billing, coding, and clinical data reporting and analysis.
- Direct patients to business offices for financial concerns.
- Assure office, exam rooms, and storage areas are adequately stocked with supplies.
- Represent, attend, and participate regularly in staff meetings, interdepartmental committees, and other department meetings to address concerns and issues in departments/clinics and for improvement of patient care.
- Use supplies conservatively to maintain inventory control and contain costs.
- Order, inventory, and maintain maintenance records/par levels of supplies.
- Prioritize and coordinate daily workflow and activities.
- Participate in projects as requested.
- Adhere to organizational, departmental, and clinic-specific standards, policies, procedures, processes, protocols, or guidelines.
- Perform duties in accordance with departmental scope of service and medical assistant scope of work.
- Demonstrate and apply knowledge, skills, and competency in required clinical skills and use of clinical equipment.
- Demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to provide care and/or service appropriate to age groups served.
- Demonstrate sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities in areas of clinical support and patient care.
Experience: N/A Education: Graduate of post-high school medical assisting program with 200 hours clinical externship, military medical specialist training, and completion of two (2) year on-the-job training in medical assisting, OR (Completion of either of the following may also be considered as equivalency): 1) one full semester of RN Adult Health Nursing coursework and its companion clinical placement, OR 2) completion of two full semesters LPN coursework, with related clinical placements OR 3) Four (4) years of on-the-job training as a hospital aide, nursing aide, or emergency room technician.
Fully qualified RN or LPN may also be considered as equivalent to education and training listed above.
License, Certification, Registration:Basic Life Support from American Heart Association
