General Overview
Under general supervision, this role encompasses a blend of technical and custodial responsibilities essential for the effective functioning of the Animal Shelter. Responsibilities include maintaining cleanliness of shelter enclosures and facilities, providing care for animals, and performing euthanasia when required, along with documenting various activities.
Key Responsibilities
• Maintain cleanliness by disinfecting the shelter, including cages and equipment, ensuring a tidy and sanitary environment.
• Provide care for animals, which includes administering medications, feeding, and cleaning as necessary.
• Carry out euthanasia procedures when deemed necessary.
• Clean and manage equipment used in euthanasia and dispose of animal remains appropriately.
• Answer phone calls, take messages, and respond to inquiries from the public.
• Complete various records and administrative tasks, including documenting citizen complaints, drug administration records, and temperature logs.
• Monitor and manage inventory of cleaning supplies, placing orders as required.
• Assist in administering medication and conducting tests for sick or injured animals as needed.
• Process applications and contracts for pet adoptions.
• Greet visitors and provide necessary intake documentation.
• Perform additional related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
A High School Diploma or equivalent is required, along with six months of experience in cleaning or handling domestic animals; or an equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Must possess and maintain a valid Virginia driver's license and achieve Euthanasia certification.
Special Skills Required
- Knowledge of animal handling protocols and safety measures, cleaning techniques, and methods for administering medications to animals.
- Proficient in using animal control and cleaning equipment.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment in managing animals within the shelter.
- Strong comprehension of written and verbal instructions, with effective communication skills.
- Ability to interact with County personnel, other agencies, and the public with tact and courtesy.
- Capacity to establish productive working relationships as required by job tasks.
- Ability to assess observable characteristics of data, individuals, or items.
- Ability to convey information clearly and follow directions from supervisors.
- Competence in reading cleaning instructions and chemical labels, operational procedures, and related animal control documentation.
- Ability to prepare work activity records, supply orders, and correspondence using established formats.
- Capability to apply logical reasoning to solve practical issues and interpret a variety of instructions.
- Ability to document and relay information, explain procedures, and follow instructions effectively.
- Basic mathematical skills for managing totals and calculations.
- Ability to handle various items and equipment, requiring minimal eye/hand/foot coordination.
- Ability to manage stress and adapt to changing work conditions.
Must be capable of physically handling animals and using related equipment. The role requires the ability to exert varying levels of force to lift, carry, push, or pull objects and/or animals. Physical demands are categorized as light work, necessitating the ability to inspect items for proper dimensions and coordinate hand-eye movements accurately. Effective communication via telephone is also required.
