About the Role

The University of Maine System is seeking a highly skilled Research Engineer to join our team. As a key member of our Innovative Media Research and Commercialization (IMRC) Center, you will be responsible for the daily operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of facility laboratory equipment. You will also train all lab users in the proper and safe use of the labs and coordinate project management for laboratory services under strategic guidance of the IMRC Center Operations Manager and in close collaboration with the IMRC Center Administrative Coordinator.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment to ensure optimal performance and safety
  • Train lab users on proper laboratory procedures and safety protocols
  • Coordinate project management for laboratory services, including scheduling and resource allocation
  • Collaborate with the IMRC Center Operations Manager and Administrative Coordinator to ensure smooth laboratory operations
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science in a related field
  • At least three years of work experience in a related field
  • Prior experience overseeing or working in a laboratory or shop facility and fostering collaborative interactions with clients or stakeholders
  • Basic familiarity with OSHA safety requirements and their application in a lab or shop environment
  • Extensive knowledge of woodshop tools and safety and at least two of the following: CAD/CAM software (AutoCAD, Fusion 360, Inventor, SolidWorks, Vectric CAM), Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, CNC processes, Laser cutting/engraving, 3D printing, electronics prototyping
Preferred Qualifications

We welcome applicants with:

  • Master of Science or Fine Arts
  • Five years of work experience in a related field
  • Prior experience as a laboratory manager
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively follow directions and take the initiative in completing complex fabrication tasks
  • Knowledge and experience with technological and design challenges pertinent to Maine and the Northeast region's creative arts and science fields
