Job Summary

The City Attorney serves as the chief legal advisor to the City of Fountain, providing legal services to the City Council, City Manager, and all departments. This role is responsible for planning and supervising the legal service needs of the City.

Key Responsibilities
  • Advise the Mayor, City Council, City Manager, and departments on legal matters affecting the City.
  • Attend board, commission, and City Council meetings to advise on legal problems and questions.
  • Communicate with the public and taxpayers regarding municipal codes and ordinances.
  • Provide legal guidance during crises or emergencies.
  • Work with legal specialists on complex cases and prepare legal documents.
  • Assist in drafting proposed legislation and instruct the executive team on legal matters.
  • Collaborate with City departments to integrate legal considerations into major projects and initiatives.
  • Develop and implement alternative dispute resolution processes.
  • Supervise subordinate positions and manage the budget and resources associated with the position.
Requirements
  • Juris Doctorate Degree from a school of law accredited by the American Bar Association.
  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Colorado.
  • Five years of experience in the practice of law.
  • Current, valid Colorado Driver's License.
  • Three years representing a public entity is preferred.
  • Municipal law experience is preferred.
  • Experience supervising a professional staff is preferred.
Capabilities
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws affecting city governments.
  • Knowledge of city ordinances and legal principles.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and establish working relationships.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions.
  • Thorough knowledge of the City of Fountain's organizational structure, goals, and objectives.

This position requires close, distance, and peripheral vision, as well as the ability to hear and communicate effectively. The ability to lift up to 25 pounds and frequently lift up to 10 pounds is also required.

The City Attorney will work effectively with the City Manager, Human Resources, and Department staff to develop and execute best practice personnel action processes. The position will also require proficiency in the use of computer software and applications, office equipment, and professional telephone use.
