Join the George Marston Whitin Memorial Community team as a Lifeguard, responsible for ensuring the safety of our pool members and guests. As a key member of our aquatic team, you will be responsible for enforcing pool rules, implementing emergency response plans, and providing exceptional customer service.
Key Responsibilities:- Prevent emergencies by continuously scanning the pool area and identifying potential hazards.
- Recognize and respond to emergencies or potential incidents in a timely and effective manner.
- Perform assists or rescues as needed, providing care such as CPR, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen.
- Complete incident reports in a timely and effective manner.
- Enforce pool rules and handle issues as they arise in a professional manner.
- Test pool chemicals at the beginning of each shift and record in the log, reporting any problems or variations.
- Attend all required monthly and yearly in-service trainings and staff meetings.
- Ensure all doors are securely locked when a lifeguard is not on duty, and never leave the pool unattended.
- Engage in active listening with members and guests to build relationships, understand their goals and interests, and take the initiative to assist in achieving those goals.
- Bring new ideas or enhancements of current programs to the attention of the Aquatic Director.
- Maintain cleanliness and neatness of the pool areas.
- Maintain and track current Lifeguarding and First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer certifications with the American Red Cross.
- Bring any problems, complaints, or suggestions related to the operation of the aquatic programs to the attention of the Aquatics Director.
- Know the state codes for swimming pools, OSHA rules and regulations for safety, and the chemicals in use and first aid for such chemicals.
- Adhere to WCC Core Competencies and Employee Manual.
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Current certification as American Red Cross Water Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certifications are prerequisites for this position.
- Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.
- Strong Leadership and customer service skills.
- Quick Decision-making skills.
- The ability to identify hazards and unsafe practices and make suitable recommendations for minimizing or eliminating those hazards.
- Read and understand WCC and Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and Northbridge Board of Health policies and procedures.
- Perform simple arithmetic calculations to monitor pool chemical levels.
- Effectively deal with stressful and emergency situations.
- Perform tasks requiring physical strength and/or stamina to effectively rescue victims, administer first aid, and CPR.
- Perform work involving frequent lifting, pushing, and pulling of heavy objects.
- Hear and distinguish a variety of sounds in a noisy environment.
- See program participants in need of assistance from any distances.
- Speak loudly to warn program participants of impending danger.
- Be able to stand for extended periods of time.
- Supports the Mission, Vision, and Direction of the Whitin Community Center.
