New Bedford, Massachusetts, United States MITRE Full time

Why choose between meaningful work and a fulfilling life? At MITRE, you can achieve both. Our team is dedicated to addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing our nation, while also prioritizing the long-term well-being of our employees. Unlike typical technology firms, MITRE operates as a not-for-profit organization focused on the public interest, free from commercial conflicts that could influence our mission.

Department Overview:

The Nuclear Weapons and C2 Systems Department at MITRE is on the lookout for a talented engineer to contribute significantly to our understanding of how natural radiation and nuclear incidents affect various systems. Our department spearheads a vibrant work program aimed at enhancing the United States' nuclear deterrent capabilities. We provide data-driven modernization recommendations, prototypes, and analyses that facilitate the effective deployment of warfighter capabilities while ensuring cost-effective upgrades to Nuclear Command, Control, and Communications (NC3) and Nuclear Weapon Systems. This role presents a unique opportunity to assist in designing and implementing strategies that ensure the survivability of weapon systems under various nuclear threat scenarios, including Electromagnetic Pulse, Ionizing Radiation, Thermal Radiation, Air-Blast, and Radiological exposure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct analyses of nuclear effects on aircraft, spacecraft, and communication systems to support the development of nuclear hardness at the system level, including comprehensive analysis and testing.
  • Develop design criteria for weapon systems backed by design analysis, modeling & simulation, and system-level trade studies.
  • Perform evaluations and validations of components, equipment, subsystems, or weapon system analytical models to ensure compliance with operationally relevant nuclear threat environments.
  • Contribute to and review Nuclear Hardness & Survivability Design Analysis Reports (DAR) and nuclear hardness system test plans, documenting compliance and certification of weapon systems.
  • Execute essential design evaluations and provide technical assessments on system survivability by analyzing system responses to nuclear events using both proprietary and third-party software/physics codes.

Domain-Specific Responsibilities/Technical Skills:

  • Possess a solid understanding of nuclear weapon effects and Transient Radiation Effects on Electronics (TREE) in both DoD and commercial systems.
  • Engage in technical planning, requirement derivation, testing, analysis, design, and documentation to support overall system compliance.
  • Experience in rad-hard design and testing of electrical circuits, including component screening and compliance with radiation environments.
  • Knowledge of techniques for compliance and performance assessments of components and systems in nuclear environments.
  • Assess uncertainties and risks related to rad-hard requirements and develop mitigation strategies.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related field; or 3 years with a Master's degree; or a PhD with relevant experience.
  • Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of particle physics, solar physics, or nuclear physics.
  • Robust mathematical and statistical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Willingness to travel up to 20% as necessary.
  • Capability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance.
  • This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site presence.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Active DoD Secret or Top Secret Clearance.
  • Experience in the survivability design of Nuclear Command, Control & Communication weapon systems.
  • Familiarity with radiation environments, both man-made and natural.
  • Leadership experience in technical projects related to nuclear physics.
  • Knowledge of transport issues in atmospheric or structural contexts.
  • Familiarity with relevant standards and engineering software/tools.
