Job Overview:

Under the guidance and oversight of the cardiovascular surgical team, the Cardiovascular Physician Assistant (CVA) delivers exceptional, cost-efficient patient care by executing cardiovascular surgical preparation tasks, as well as peri-operative and post-operative procedures. The CVA also plays a vital role in assisting during cardiovascular surgical interventions.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducts initial evaluations for all incoming patients, which includes gathering essential medical history, reviewing medical records, performing physical examinations, documenting findings in patient records, and alerting the supervising physician of any abnormal results.
  • Educates patients and their families on pre-operative procedures, addressing inquiries related to surgery, recovery, and risk management; provides information regarding blood transfusions. Executes peri-operative procedures, displaying relevant chest x-rays and patient data. Reviews patient charts for allergies, significant medical history, abnormal findings, and specific cardiovascular conditions.
  • Assists in cardiovascular surgical procedures, including aiding surgeons in chest openings and cannulating major vessels and the heart. Performs invasive tasks such as the insertion and monitoring of various lines and tubes, administering medications for arrhythmias, and conducting thoracentesis and catheterizations.
  • Implements post-operative care procedures, including documenting standard post-operative orders in patient records; collaborates with physicians to assess and manage intravascular volume, pharmacological treatments, and nutritional needs; monitors patients' recovery status across multiple systems; reviews vital signs and lab results; and assists with the management of intravascular devices.
  • Participates in patient discharge processes alongside social workers, pharmacists, and physical therapists; ensures timely completion of discharge and transfer summaries.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

  • Physician Assistant License (California)
  • Basic Life Support Certification
  • National Provider Identifier required upon hire
Additional Requirements:
  • Experience as a cardiovascular physician assistant is preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.
