The Native American Food Sovereignty Alliance (NAFSA) is a national network of Indigenous leaders committed to restoring food systems that empower tribal self-determination and enhance community wellness.

NAFSA's mission focuses on supporting Native communities across the nation through advocacy, education, and networking as they work to revitalize their Indigenous food systems.

By combining proven strategies with innovative approaches, NAFSA promotes ethical economic development that encourages local food production, renews natural resources, and enriches traditional cultural practices, mentoring a new generation of Native food sovereignty advocates, chefs, farmers, and practitioners.

Position Summary

We are seeking an HR Manager to oversee all facets of human resources practices and processes, with a strong emphasis on benefits, payroll, and performance management experience. The HR Manager will serve as the primary contact for all employee-related matters.

The key responsibilities will include managing activities such as job design, recruitment, employee relations, performance management, training & development, and talent management. Our people are our most valuable asset, and the role of Human Resources Manager is vital to our success, ensuring a positive and productive workplace while promoting NAFSA's values and culture.

Essential Duties
  • Develop and implement HR strategies and initiatives that align with the overall organizational strategic plan.
  • Facilitate management and employee relations by addressing demands, grievances, or other issues.
  • Oversee the recruitment and selection process.
  • Support current and future organizational needs through the development, engagement, motivation, and retention of human capital.
  • Design and monitor comprehensive HR strategies, systems, tactics, and procedures across the organization.
  • Foster a positive working environment.
  • Manage a performance appraisal system that drives high performance.
  • Maintain compensation plans and benefits programs.
  • Assess training needs and implement training programs.
  • Provide management with reports and decision support through HR metrics.
  • Ensure compliance with legal requirements in all aspects of human resource management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, which may include assistance with Finance and Communications activities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

To excel in this role, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The following qualifications are required:

  • Proven experience as an HR manager or other HR executive.
  • People-oriented and results-driven.
  • Demonstrable experience with human resources metrics.
  • Knowledge of HR systems and databases.
  • Critical thinking skills along with strong leadership abilities.
  • Excellent active listening, negotiation, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to build and effectively manage interpersonal relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • In-depth knowledge of labor laws and HR best practices, particularly in relation to Native American organizations.
Position Requirements

Demonstrated commitment to the principles and priorities of NAFSA.

Well-organized, detail-oriented, and capable of meeting short-term deadlines while managing multiple long-term projects.

Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills in English.

High level of professionalism and outstanding interpersonal skills.

Ability to work collaboratively as a team member and independently in a team environment.

Background and familiarity with agriculture, Indigenous food sovereignty, and rural and diverse land-based Tribal communities are preferred.

Commitment to equity and justice in the Indigenous food sovereignty movement.

Education and Experience

Education Required: Bachelor's Degree (Degree in Human Resources or related field) or a combination of education and experience may be considered as a substitute for degree requirement.

Experience: At least five years of experience in human resources management, including a successful record of recruiting, onboarding, managing benefits, and training.

Computer Skills

Proficiency in various technology platforms such as Google Suite, ADP Run, MS Office, Zoom, and database management.

Compensation and Benefits

Job Type: Part time, .5 FTE

Annual Salary: $40,000.00 per year

Location: Remote

Preferred Location: AZ, NM, WI, MN, WA

Benefits:
