Job Summary

This position involves diagnosing and treating acute, episodic, or chronic illness, either independently or as part of a healthcare team. The successful candidate will focus on health promotion and disease prevention, order diagnostic tests, and prescribe medication as needed.

Main Responsibilities

  • Routine Medical Examinations: Perform medical examinations on inmates or detainees under established guidelines.
  • Disease Diagnosis and Treatment: Diagnose and treat acute and chronic medical illnesses, providing medical treatment and services consistent with basic health care standards.
  • Treatment Planning: Develop comprehensive treatment plans and prognosis based on patients' health conditions.
  • Prescription Management: Prescribe medication dosages, routes, and frequencies based on patients' diagnosis permitted under state and DEA licensure.
  • Diagnostics and Testing: Order, perform, or interpret the results of diagnostic tests such as CBCs, EKGs, and radiographs (x-rays) with physician oversight as needed.
  • Clinical Assessment and Treatment: Analyze and interpret patient history, symptoms, physical findings, and diagnostic information to develop appropriate clinical assessment and treatment plans.
  • Patient Education: Counsel patients on prescribed drug regimens, possible side effects or interactions with other drugs or substances, and recommend interventions to modify behavior associated with health risks.
  • Health Promotion and Disease Prevention: Educate patients about self-management of acute or chronic illnesses, tailoring instructions to individual circumstances, and provide information needed to promote good health, reduce risk factors, and prevent disease or disability.
  • Specialist Consultation: Consult with or refer patients to appropriate specialists when conditions exceed the scope of practice or expertise.
  • Professional Development: Stay current with developments in nursing by reading current literature, discussing cases with colleagues, and participating in professional organizations or conferences.
  • Follow-up Care: Schedule follow-up visits to monitor patients or evaluate health or illness care.
  • Compliance and Safety: Maintain current knowledge of state legal regulations for nurse practitioner/physician assistant practice and licensure requirements, and adhere to departmental policies and procedures in areas such as safety and infection control.
  • Availability: Be available for 24-hour coverage based on facility needs, advising nursing staff in the care of detainees/inmates/residents after hours.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Educational Background: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing or physician assistant studies required.
  • Licensure: Must have a current, unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner, or as a Physician Assistant in the state the facility is located, as well as a current DEA license. Maintain current copy of applicable licenses at the facility.
  • Experience: Two years of advanced practice experience preferred.
  • Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, skill in performing uncomplicated surgical procedures, ability to administer prescribed medications, perform complete physical appraisals of patients, identify and evaluate illnesses, initiate diagnostic laboratory tests, manage patient care, work with patients having various physical problems, compile and evaluate medical histories, plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments, communicate effectively, establish and maintain effective working relationships, and work with computers and necessary software typically used by the department.

Estimated Salary: $120,000 - $150,000 per year, depending on qualifications and location.
