Position Overview

The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) plays a crucial role in facilitating surgical and invasive procedures by ensuring the availability of sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment. This position is essential in maintaining a sterile environment and proactively addressing the needs of the surgical team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the scrub person, assisting during surgical and invasive procedures by preparing necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Organize and prepare sterile instruments and supplies, performing surgical counts with the circulating RN as per established protocols.
  • Maintain a sterile field, ensuring its integrity and assisting with the placement of sterile drapes while providing instruments and supplies to the surgical team.
  • Collect and label specimens accurately, reporting any implanted devices or drains to the circulator.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of special instruments and equipment tailored to specific patient populations.
  • Understand and uphold patients' rights and responsibilities, adapting to their age and comprehension levels.
  • Assist in emergency situations, including CPR, as required.
  • Support the cleaning and preparation of the surgical area and instruments before and after procedures.
  • Engage in continuous education and competency verification activities.
  • Contribute to financial accountability by utilizing resources efficiently and participating in performance improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in patient safety measures and orientation of new staff and students.
  • Prepare patients for surgery, including skin preparation and urinary catheter insertion as necessary.
  • Exhibit flexibility in staffing and scheduling based on unit needs.
  • Maintain professional grooming and attire in accordance with company policies.

Qualifications

Certification is required from one of the following: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST), National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), or Tech in Surgery – Certified (TS-C) from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). Specific state certifications may apply based on employment location.

BLS Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association is required at hire for certain locations.

Education

An Associate degree, Vocational Certification, or Military Certificate in Surgical Technology is required.

Experience

Preferred candidates will have at least one year of experience in perioperative settings, operating rooms, or related military surgical technology roles.
