Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Environmental Health Specialist to join our team at Great Basin College. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and managing the college's environmental health, safety, and hazard control programs in accordance with state, local, and federal laws and policies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement safety compliance programs covering various subjects in line with OSHA, EPA, UFC, and other relevant state and federal regulations.
  • Provide safety training to staff, faculty, and selected students, designing and executing safety and environmental programs to ensure adherence to local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Obtain certification from the State of Nevada Division of Child & Family Services to deliver safety training to MCD Child Center staff and early childhood education students.
  • Create and sustain an accident prevention program, investigating incidents to identify potential hazards.
  • Review, develop, and implement risk management solutions and act as a liaison with NSHE risk management services.
  • Conduct safety and ergonomic inspections, working with Facilities Operation Director to inspect and monitor facilities.
  • Maintain State permits for hazardous materials, such as EPA permitting and proper disposal of hazardous waste materials from the science labs and auto diesel shops at the end of each semester.
  • Attend campus and NSHE safety steering committee meetings as an ad hoc member and participate in relevant national, state, and local organizations to enhance community and campus safety.
  • Identify safety and health hazards through ongoing inspections, recommend feasible solutions, and determine if immediate evacuation is necessary.
  • Serve as the primary safety instructor for all students, faculty, and staff, ensuring proper training to prevent accidents, loss of time, and damage.
  • Manage environmental health and safety programs related to hazardous materials, regulated wastes, environmental protection, and emergency planning in coordination with UNR Public Safety and fire protection systems.
  • Respond to information requests from internal departments, external agencies, and organizations about environmental health and safety programs.
  • Assist with budget management for environmental health and safety programs and develop action plans for operational and funding needs.
  • Ability to be available for after-hours call-out and coverage of B&G on-call phone on a rotational basis.
  • Ability to assist in campus events for safety purposes, may need to assist with event setup and cleanup.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Engineering, or a related field that may include fields of chemical, physical, biological, industrial hygiene, environmental, occupational safety, or health sciences.
  • Three years of technical experience in environmental health and safety program management, such as environmental compliance, fire-life safety, occupational safety, and hazardous materials.
  • OR, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Science, Engineering, or a related field that may include fields of chemical, physical, biological, industrial hygiene, environmental, occupational safety, or health sciences.
  • Related experience in a higher education setting with multiple sites.
  • Certifications in related fields, such as Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Certification.
  • Minimum EMS certification, or willingness to be certified within the first few months of employment, at the First Aid/CPR level.
  • Current OSHA 40-hour Hazwoper certification or willingness to obtain certification within 90 days of employment.
Travel

The position may require driving to other GBC campuses, with or without reasonable accommodation as per the Americans with Disabilities Act, with possible overnight stays to coordinate students and programs throughout the service area. There must be a commitment to the GBC mission to serve rural Nevada. The successful candidate will participate in several state-wide or national meetings each year that require overnight travel.

Compensation

The budgeted salary range for this position is $59,186 - $73,500. Salary is based on relatable education and experience, internal equity, and budgets.

Grants-in-Aid for Faculty Employees

Great Basin College is proud to provide a reduced-rate tuition benefit to faculty and qualified dependents. Faculty can take up to six credits per semester at a reduced rate. Dependents of faculty have unlimited credits, but in order to be eligible, children must be unmarried and under the age of 24 and must receive at least 50% of their financial support from the employee and/or employee's spouse or domestic partner.
