POSITION SUMMARY
The Fleet Maintenance Technician is tasked with executing proficient maintenance and repair work on a diverse range of municipal equipment and vehicles.
KEY CHARACTERISTICS
This role represents a fully qualified position within the maintenance and operations job family, where tasks are carried out utilizing various procedures and techniques. This is an experienced level role, demonstrating full competency in the technical and functional aspects of the assigned responsibilities.
Responsibilities typically encompass the application of sound technical principles, alongside best practices associated with planning, diagnosing, troubleshooting, and resolving issues.
Incumbents are expected to perform a variety of assignments that necessitate journey-level knowledge in fleet maintenance.
IMPORTANT REQUIREMENTS:
This position has been classified as safety-sensitive in accordance with applicable laws. Candidates selected for this role will be required to undergo testing for alcohol and controlled substances upon acceptance of a conditional job offer.
PRIMARY DUTIES
Diagnoses and repairs electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems across a wide array of vehicles, including heavy construction machinery; performs repairs and adjustments on gasoline and diesel engines, fuel systems, transmissions, and other mechanical components.
Conducts general mechanical repair work on vehicles, trucks, light equipment, heavy machinery, and specialized automotive equipment.
Inspects, tests, and diagnoses issues involving various vehicle systems/components, such as engines, ignition systems, computerized engine controls, and more.
Evaluates vehicles to ascertain necessary repair or maintenance tasks; performs diagnostic computer testing; collaborates with drivers or equipment operators to gather insights on issues, assists in diagnosing problems, and prevents future complications; determines necessary parts and supplies for repairs.
Diagnoses and repairs vehicle component systems and sub-systems, including electrical, fuel supply, air conditioning, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems; performs welding as needed; fabricates and modifies metal parts; executes body repairs and other metal component repairs; transports equipment from the field to the repair facility; conducts emergency repairs in the field as required; identifies and reports vehicle issues needing further maintenance and repair; escalates complex repair matters to appropriate personnel.
Performs routine and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment to enhance their lifecycle, minimize downtime, and improve productivity; carries out specialized repair and maintenance work to ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
Engages in related tasks as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
A minimum of four years of specialized mechanic experience with medium and heavy equipment, as well as passenger vehicles, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTSValid Driver's License; Commercial Driver's License with Class A Tanker Endorsement within six months of hire; ADEQ emissions license within six months of hire; maintenance of all required certifications/licenses at job entry.
KNOWLEDGE
Understanding of methods, materials, tools, and standard practices for the installation, operation, and maintenance of fleet equipment and systems; operation, maintenance, and repair of fleet vehicles; general mechanics; computer-controlled systems related to engines and transmissions; specialty areas such as hydraulics and welding; occupational hazards and safe working practices; applicable OSHA regulations; standard office equipment and relevant software.
SKILLS
Ability to diagnose and repair operational issues on various equipment and vehicles; maintain accurate records of maintenance work; perform manual and physical tasks; read and interpret technical documents and diagrams; utilize computers and software applications; operate testing and monitoring equipment; estimate time and material requirements for projects; use hand and power tools effectively; communicate and interact effectively with coworkers and the public.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This position requires physical strength, with the ability to exert varying weights and perform tasks that may involve heavy lifting and manual labor.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is primarily conducted in a shop environment, with exposure to mechanical hazards, noise, and various environmental factors.
