We are seeking a highly skilled HVAC Technician III to join our team at George Mason University. As a key member of our facilities maintenance team, you will be responsible for performing a variety of skilled tasks in HVAC, including installation, modification, maintenance, and repair work on university systems and equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Perform a series of skilled tasks in HVAC, including installation, modification, maintenance, and repair work on university systems and equipment.
  • Lead a team of junior technicians in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Work without supervision and occasionally oversee subordinate workers performing installation, modification, maintenance, and repair work on university HVAC systems and equipment.
  • Maintain cooling towers, hot water and chilled water piping and controls, direct expansion systems, fans and blowers, starters, pneumatic and electrical controls, condensate drains, domestic and commercial refrigeration, walk-in coolers and freezers, water fountains, and ice machines.
  • Install new motors, pumps, compressors, and other parts as necessary.
  • Clean, repair, replace, and/or adjust pneumatic, electric, and motor controls, and related safety devices.
  • Make initial settings and final adjustments of refrigeration and heating and air conditioning systems; modify existing installations to obtain required results.
  • Repair or replace other functional components of HVAC equipment or systems as necessary.
  • Carry out designated preventive maintenance and seasonal start-up and shut-down procedures.
  • Analyze HVAC systems and controls to determine problems and initiate repairs as directed by supervisor.
  • Prioritize work, determine the appropriate materials to order, communicate status of repairs with customers, research different methods of repairs and available materials, and keep work areas and buildings assigned in good working order.
  • Drive a vehicle to and from locations and keep vehicle supplied with tools and materials and keep it maintained and in an orderly, clean condition.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties such as cleaning and painting the equipment and mechanical areas.
  • Pick up materials from suppliers when requested. Inspect areas and report problems to supervisor.
  • Maintain paperwork and electronic communications, including work orders, including recording time.
  • Order and include materials on work orders in an expedient manner.
  • Follow established university and departmental policies and procedures; follow established safety procedures and report accidents and problems to supervisor promptly.
  • Perform assigned progressive on-the-job training tasks to develop skills in the HVAC trade.
  • Employee is designated as Essential Personnel. All essential personnel employees are required to report for snow removal and assist with clearing grounds, roads, pathways, sidewalks, or steps.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated progressive experience (generally 5+ years) in the HVAC trade.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in the HVAC trade.
  • Knowledge of the common hazards and necessary safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to apply, local, state, and national mechanical codes.
  • Ability to use necessary hand and power tools and testing equipment.
  • Ability to analyze HVAC systems and controls to determine problems and initiate repairs as directed by supervisor.
  • Valid driver's license: must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator's license that meets all of GMU's requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason's Vehicle Use Policy 1411.
  • EPA-approved universal refrigerant recovery type I, II, & III CFC licenses (required or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire).
