Job Summary

The Boston Public Schools is seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer to join its Facilities Management team. As a key member of the team, the successful candidate will be responsible for managing the daily operation, maintenance, construction, repairs, planning, and design for all HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, Energy Management Systems, Elevators, and Fire Protection Systems in BPS buildings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage daily operation, maintenance, construction, repairs, planning, and design for all HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, Energy Management Systems, Elevators, and Fire Protection Systems in BPS buildings.
  • Develop and monitor contract budgets and change orders.
  • Direct Project Management of various projects such as Mechanical Upgrades, Elevator Modernizations, Co-Generator Replacement, and Energy Efficiency projects.
  • Coordinate fire extinguisher and kitchen suppression systems inspections with on-going building occupancy permit inspections.
  • Oversee Energy Efficiency projects and coordinate annual elevator inspections with the MA Department of Public Safety.
  • Direct various BPS employees in the daily operation, maintenance, and repairs of BPS building mechanical systems.
  • Authorize overtime for after-hours maintenance and repairs, and respond to emergencies.
  • Develop and review plans and specifications for construction projects.
  • Coordinate maintenance and repairs of BPS buildings with various external agencies and utilities.
Requirements
  • Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering.
  • 7-10 years of experience employed in a professional setting.
  • Experience in school construction and contracts.
  • Familiarity with reading and reviewing plans and specs, working with building trades, and construction processes.
  • Experience with budget and financial management.
  • Experience using computers, Microsoft Office suite, Google Drive suite, and electronic communications tools.
  • Experience with management of small and large projects, including fundraising, managing budgets and timelines, coordinating with stakeholders, and reporting on project results.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior work in either Massachusetts state or local government with a knowledge of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Safety regulations and the Boston Fire Prevention Code.
  • Experience working in an educational setting, especially with children and teachers.
  • Familiarity with the city of Boston and Boston Public Schools.
