Job Summary:
The Lead MRI Technologist is responsible for establishing, managing, and monitoring standards and processes in the MRI department. This includes communicating and training staff on systems to ensure adherence to department guidelines and standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with radiologists, departmental leadership, and staff to ensure protocols, patient care processes, dosing, and imaging are performed per protocol.
- Ensure safe MRI practices in accordance with departmental standards.
- Assist in third-party accreditation processes such as ACR and Joint Commission.
- Perform scheduled quality control procedures on MRI scanner and other related equipment.
- Record QA results as required and report any potential equipment-related problems to the supervisor.
- Prepare for and perform intravenous injection of MR contrast agents, including the use of the MR-compatible power injector.
- Understand and communicate the possible contraindications as well as monitor for and respond to adverse reactions to MR contrast agents.
- Record all information regarding contrast injections appropriately.
- Insert IV catheters as needed.
- Perform point-of-care testing as needed.
- Instruct patients and visitors in MR safety procedures.
- Ensure adherence to safety practices by all persons entering the MRI area.
- Review outpatient schedules to confirm exams have been protocoled and reviewed for potential contraindications.
- Act as the final checkpoint for patient safety and protocol clarification.
- Communicate with radiologists for protocol clarification when necessary.
- Use designated department protocols and report any issues to the site supervisor and/or Quality Assurance Manager.
- Assist in the instruction of visitors and medical staff rotating through the area.
- Mentor new staff and fellow technologists as necessary.
- Adhere to "MGH" "Good-To-Go" policies and practices.
- Review the MRI patient procedure screening form with the patient and complete the MRI staff-specific questions.
- Utilize departmental specific tools to confirm contrast dosing and patient safety.
- Maintain a neat work environment, including patient care areas, MR scan rooms, MR control rooms, and reading areas.
- Monitor appropriate inventory and par levels of necessary supplies and communicate with the Manager/Supervisor.
- Assist the receptionist and other Department staff in various duties as necessary.
- Develop knowledge of MR physics through on-the-job training, reading, etc., and keep current on new developments in MR imaging.
- Identify hazardous system malfunctions, secure the area, and remove patients and personnel from the magnet bay during emergency situations.
Requirements:
- Mental/visual ability to operate complex electronic equipment and instrumentation and perform quality control procedures on equipment.
- Ability to transfer patients to the MR scan table and push the table from the prep room to the exam room.
- Must lift and transfer patients to stretchers, etc.
- Must demonstrate the ability to provide appropriate care to various age populations.
- Must be able to read, write, and effectively communicate in English.
- Qualifications:
- BLS
- R.T.(MR)
- Graduate of an approved Medical Imaging program
- Preferred:
- Radiation Licensure in the state of Massachusetts
