Medical Nurse Specialist

Wisconsin Community Services is seeking a highly skilled Medical Nurse Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our community mental health team, you will provide medical treatment and case management services to individuals with mental health and/or substance use diagnoses.
Responsibilities:- Conduct initial and ongoing health assessments of participants
- Arrange for or provide follow-up medical care as needed
- Ensure written orders are on file and updated for prescription medications
- Observe participant self-administration of medication or administer if necessary
- Instruct participants about medications, side effects, precautions, and contraindications
- Participate in formulation of medical treatment plans as appropriate
- Notify case manager, supervisor, and APNP/psychiatrists of psychiatric symptoms or behavior changes
- Serve as liaison with other medical professionals when necessary
- Conduct blood pressures, weights, and other medical treatments as needed
- Document participant or collateral contacts
- A two-, three-, or four-year degree from an accredited Nursing School
- Licensure of a registered nurse
- 1-2 years nursing experience
- No convictions or license revocations that would fail a caregiver background check
- Valid driver's license, automobile, and sufficient insurance
- Good clinical skills, especially related to medical issues, mental illnesses, and substance abuse disorders
- Knowledge of DSM V-TR, psychotropic medications, and their side effects
- Ability to communicate effectively and in a positive manner with staff and participants
- Ability to respond appropriately in crisis situations
- Participants' rights, including principles of ethics and confidentiality
- Good organizational and computer and typing skills
- Effective use of time
- Ability to assist participants with medical and case management issues
Work is performed in the office, community, and participants' homes. Participants may be unstable and symptomatic at times. Much of the community outreach is done in the inner city. Hours average 24 hours per week.
Physical Demands: Must be able to go up and down stairs and lift and carry 20 pounds to assist with participants' medical or mobility issues.
