Job Title: Veterinary Technician

Job Summary:

The veterinary technician is the doctor's primary medical support person, responsible for assisting in examination procedures, diagnosis, and treatment phases. They relieve doctors of technical work and administrative detail, ensuring efficient patient care.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide compassionate care to patients, ensuring their comfort and well-being.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with hospital medical policies and procedures.
  • Prepare and maintain exam rooms and treatment areas or vehicles.
  • Assist doctors in medical, surgical, and dental procedures, preparing patients for surgery and administering anesthesia.
  • Monitor patients during surgery and recovery, administering fluids as needed.
  • Give injections and administer oral medications in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Perform emergency procedures, such as controlling bleeding, resuscitation, and external cardiac massage.
  • Assist in restraining pets when necessary.
  • Perform clinical laboratory procedures, including fecal flotation exams, heartworm checks, skin scrapings, urinalysis, and fungal cultures.
  • Take radiographs and administer EKGs and EEGs.
  • Admit and discharge patients on doctor's orders, ensuring they are well-groomed and in a medically appropriate state.
  • Counsel clients on various aspects of animal care, explaining medication dosage and purpose, and reinforcing proper care and procedures at home.
  • Understand and explain prescription drug usage and dosage to clients.
  • Properly clean surgical materials after use, maintaining a stocked and prepared operating room.
  • Maintain an appropriate inventory of medical supplies, as determined by the inventory control system.
  • Assist other staff members as required.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Maintain positive, cooperative relationships with other employees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Veterinary Technician Certification desirable but not required.
  • Minimum two years experience as a veterinary technician or assistant.

Personal Requirements:

  • Genuinely enjoy working with animals and can deal with them even when they are stressed or ill or in pain.
  • Can stay calm and efficient during a medical crisis.
  • Experienced in teamwork and works well with all hospital staff members.
  • Excellent client communication skills.
  • Physical Effort: Work requires lifting and carrying animals (assisted by other staff members for animals over 40 lbs.). Walks or stands for extended periods or time; frequently works in a bent position.
  • Working conditions: May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises, and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches, and contagious diseases.
