Perioperative Assistant

Job Summary

This Perioperative Assistant role is a critical member of the surgical team, providing essential support to ensure smooth and efficient patient care. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills, a strong work ethic, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist nursing personnel in transferring patients to and from OR tables, beds, wheelchairs, stretchers, or carts.
  • Conduct postmortem care and transport deceased patients to the morgue.
  • Attend respiratory and cardiac codes and assist physicians, anesthesia, and nurses as needed with patient care.
  • Transport patients from units and the Emergency Department (ER) to the Operating Room (OR).
  • Gather necessary items for patient transportation, including oxygen tanks, monitors, masks, and ambu bags.
  • Assist with regional anesthesia by holding patients in position for spinal/epidural blocks.
  • Perform surgical shaves for surgery patients.
  • Answer phones and communicate information to the Operating Room staff as needed.
  • Ensure the Surgery area is stocked and supplied to meet patient and nursing staff needs.
  • Restock sterile supply areas, maintain supply carts, and clean carts as directed.
  • Monitor and replenish fluids and blankets in warmers, mark containers with expiration dates, and notify Sterile Processing of missing items.
  • Participate in the preparation of Operating Rooms and Case Carts.
  • Remove case carts from the sterile core, review surgeon preference cards, and ensure all necessary items are present.
  • Assist with OR room setup, including setting supplies, gathering equipment, and opening sterile supplies using aseptic technique.
  • Operate autoclaves, assist with retrieving and transporting sterilized items, and remove instrumentation/equipment from case carts.
  • Transport patients, supplies, and equipment safely to and from the Operating Rooms.
  • Deliver surgery equipment to Patient Care Centers, transport blood products, Laboratory and Pathology reports, Radiology films, and other patient-related information to the Operating Rooms.
  • Participate in the maintenance of the Surgery Department, including running routine biological testing of autoclaves, maintaining blood refrigerators, and monitoring CO2 gas tanks.
Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant, EMT, or Certified Phlebotomist with 1-2 years of experience or 1-2 years of related patient care experience.
  • Ability to use a computer keyboard and knowledge of medical terminology.
  • CPR certification.
  • Ability to rotate shifts, provide coverage, and be called off based on unit demands.
  • Exposure to contagious diseases, radiation, chemical, caustic materials, electrical equipment, and hazards associated with their use.
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting, bending, squatting, standing for prolonged periods, and reaching overhead.
