Overview:
Pediatric Speech Therapists (SLPs) deliver essential speech and language therapy services to children aged from birth to 21 years, addressing a wide range of diagnoses and developmental challenges. This role may also encompass feeding therapy services.
Key Responsibilities:
The following duties are integral to the position:
- Assess and diagnose speech and language capabilities, providing tailored treatment for children experiencing various communication disorders, including dysphagia and developmental delays.
- Identify dysphagia and collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to manage it effectively.
- Educate families and at-risk individuals regarding swallowing and feeding disorders.
- Stay updated on advancements in dysphagia management and contribute to the knowledge base regarding treatment approaches for feeding difficulties.
- Program and instruct on the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices as necessary.
- Facilitate participation in multi-sensory, educational, functional, and social activities to assist patients in developing or regaining skills and adapting to disabilities.
- Select appropriate activities tailored to the patient’s physical abilities, comprehension levels, and interests to promote maximum independence.
- Prepare patients for academic and daily living activities, supporting the restoration of functions and necessary lifestyle adjustments.
- Guide patients and their families in treatment procedures to ensure effective carryover in various environments.
- Maintain precise and timely documentation of patient reports in electronic medical records.
- Review patient files to gather background information prior to evaluations, ensuring comprehensive data collection.
- Administer, score, and interpret evaluation reports to create and adjust individualized treatment plans.
- Evaluate treatment plans and patient performance, modifying goals as needed, while observing and documenting patient responses to treatments.
- Uphold high productivity standards in patient care.
- Enforce patient attendance policies consistently and fairly.
- Act as a consultant to educational, medical, and other professional groups, as well as colleagues.
- Collaborate with other disciplines to integrate speech and language objectives into daily activities.
- Research and implement innovative speech therapy techniques.
- Refer patients to additional services as appropriate.
- Participate in meetings and professional development activities to enhance growth.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
When eligible, supervise Clinical Fellows, Speech-Language Pathology Assistants, or students as directed by the Lead SLP.
Qualifications:
To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- A master’s degree in communication disorders or Speech-Language Pathology, along with relevant experience and training.
- Basic computer skills and the ability to learn new software and web-based applications, including electronic medical records.
Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:
Applicants must possess an active and unencumbered state SLP license, a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from ASHA, and Basic Life Support (BLS Pro) certification from the American Heart Association. Membership in ASHA is recommended, and HIPAA certification is encouraged.
