Medical Laboratory Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Technologist Microbiology to join our team at Yale New Haven Health. As a key member of our clinical laboratory, you will be responsible for performing routine and specialized clinical laboratory analyses in all major sections of the Microbiology Laboratory.
Key Responsibilities- Apply basic principles of microbiology, laboratory procedure, theory, and techniques to ensure accurate and reliable test results.
- Interpret bacterial, fungal, and mycobacterial cultures, and identify and susceptibility of bacteria, yeast, and mold isolates.
- Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of specimen collection and processing, including quality assessment, volume requirements, and storage conditions.
- Participate in inventory control, including reagent and quality control preparation and verification/validation according to regulatory guidelines.
- Independently troubleshoot and follow up on any problems/issues, including documentation and escalation if required.
- Collaborate on standard operating procedures revisions/drafts as needed to adjust for process improvement initiatives and regulatory changes.
- Navigate and show competency with the use of LIS applications to report, identify, and troubleshoot specimens effectively.
- Proficient in the use of LIS applications, software programs, Word, Excel, Outlook, and other internal tracking databases.
- Demonstrate organizational skills to prioritize work according to urgency and medical need, and perform multiple tasks to optimize efficiency.
- Participate in teaching lab personnel, students, and lab residents following established laboratory procedures in a courteous professional manner.
- Participate in the department's continuing education program and document a minimum of 12 education credits annually.
- Adhere to laboratory policies and procedures, regulatory requirements, hospital attendance and tardiness policies, and demonstrate mutual respect for all laboratory personnel.
- Exhibit excellent customer service skills and collaborate with other departments and clients regarding inquiries and test results.
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology, Microbiology, or equivalent.
- MT(ASCP), M(ASCP), SM(ASCP) or equivalent eligibility required; certification preferred.
- One (1) or two (2) years experience in an accredited Clinical Laboratory.
- Working knowledge of equipment, instrumentation, and materials used in the Clinical Laboratory.
- Experience with computer technology, including efficiency in word processing applications, spreadsheet design, and data analysis.
- Ability to work as a member of a diverse team and excellent organizational skills.
